It's as easy as pie. Read the book once through, then do the practical.
Practical =
1. Here's a bunch of cartridges, find me a a .45 colt, ok that's good, find me a .38 special... ok that's good find me....etc..etc
2. Pick up this revolver, and prove it safe...Ok, good, ok, pick up this automatic, and prove it safe, ok, what cartidge is that firearm chambered for, ok good
3. Ok, pick up that pistol, and put on a secure locking device, (**prove it safe first)
4. Ok, how is a handgun properly put in storage, Ok, good. Ok, how must a handgun be legally transported? Ok what documentation do you need? Ok good.
5. Ok, what do ACT's and PROVE's stand for?
Ok, that's good, we'll send off the results of both your written and practical, and you should get it back in a couple weeks. Then you send it in with your application. Have a nice day.
Like I said. Easy as pie.
