Russian SKS45 long thread.

So does anyone have any advice on how to open a crate of 30yr old Czech ammo?

get vice grips or good pliers, and roll the tabs like you would a can of corned beef or spam.

start with length wise first, then do the short side (if you do it the other way youre going to get really frusterated, and snap off the rings)

Bayonet removal for shooting. I have a Norc i use for shooting vintage rifle matches (similar to the Service rifle course of fire, but only at 100, 200 and 300 yards). I installed a rear peep sight because my tired old eyes don't work well with open sights.

I removed the bayo and cut off the lug, so it would not snag in things. I do not have any "before" and "after" results to post, but I can say it shoots very well with no bayo. I have won a number of matches with it.

But as I read the posts here, asking about bayo removal, it ocurrs to me that forward weight in a gun generally helps hold it more steady when shooting from an unsuported position. In fact, I poured molten lead into the forend of my AR-15 to add weight for that very reason.

So, leaving bayo on seems like a good idea. If it comes off easily, it would be easy to try grouping both ways.

DHL driver asked what was in the crate (like they always do) and I played dumb (like I always do) ... "I don't know... but it sure looks Heavy!"

To clarify earlier speculation, I had ammo and guns and live in Eastern Ontario - shipment was DHL <not Canada Post>, and I did not receive a tracking number prior to delivery.

Now to open packages and see what I've got...

Quick inspection: x2 TULA Arsenal, 1953, All Matching <not forced>, blotchy dark & brown Arctic Birch Stocks <no cracks or signficant dents, no redish hue, no extra cross bolt in grip>, No Refurb Marks, chrome bayo with original coating, chrome bolt carrier, Type 3 (curved) gas block, beautiful chrome bore. Came with goodies (sling, oiler, cleaning kit, ammo carrier, stripper clips).

<Thanks for all the ID info in your other post Curtton - I'm looking forward to examing all the numerous little cyrillics and other misc. markings>

I have to confess I'm surprised - these appear to be non-refurbs, although I can't say whether they're issued/fired or not at this point (assume they were...). I did not pay for hand-select and figured I'd be getting refurbs with laminate stocks. I do plan to shoot these. Will post pics later.

Some music to go with the lyrics from Post 3000 - you can play it in the background while you're opening the package!

would be nice if someone could add SKS to the vid and then save it for 4000.

So is this "golden" blade just cosmo stained ?????

hey G: it aint cosmo or the carrier would also be golden , im telling ya mine is gold plated , albeit over the years it had tinned out some what.

The soviets probably got shellac happy on the bayo.

nope , aint shellac cos shellac on arctic birch is red.

Good morning everyone!!!! So they are starting to arrive!!! I hope I get mine today!! Hey grayrc do you know what day yours was shipped?? Argh. It's so close. I don't have to work so I really hope it comes today!!!!

Yes - DHL shipping invoice is dated last Friday Jan 16 (I'm in Ontario).

Both my ammo (x1 crate) and my SKS (x2) came in the same shipment from DHL.
