I'm pretty sure the 1954 Tula I picked up is non-refurb. All the # match, including stock, nothing has been force matched and I can't find any refurb markings. Bolt and carrier are silver and the bore is clean and shiny. Took her to the range today and put 120rds through it without a single hiccup. Needless to say I am quite pleased with it.

Me, x 3. When you see an original beside a refurbished carbine, the differences are quite apparent.

Look at the muzzle, the crown will be bright. Look at the bluing, two tone body cover with no refurb stamps. Examine the leading edges of the body cover (forks), they will be bare, not blued. Brownish coloured bayonet. All stamped matching. Dark red shellac stock in birch wood only (possibility of late '56 having laminate) with matching stamped serial number.

Among other things....

Sweet!:)

But how were the groups, Man?

How were the groups?

But how were the groups, Man?

I sighted it in at 50 yds. Shot 6" high and about 3" to the left. 5 shot group was about 4" but I wasn't really trying, I was too eager to put rounds through it to really concentrate.
Then I blasted some water-filled 4L milk jugs offhand just for $hits and giggles, and the rifle seemed accurate enough.
Next I cranked the rear sight up to the 200m mark to see how close it was. I aimed for the steel gong at 200yds and pulled the trigger. Gong! I probably averaged 80% accuracy at 200 - 250yds on various targets.
I doubt this rifle will win any accuracy contests, but it sure is fun to shoot!

Cool! I had an old Russian SKS years ago that grouped minute-of-dinner plate at 100 yards.
