Russian SKS45 long thread.

Here we go, shooter grade from frontier, non-matching. Overall good condition, gas tube fits a bit weird, almost as if it expanded a little bit since the gas tube latch is binding. Stock has been cleaned, heated to remove any grease and refinished using boiled linseed oil.

I cant seem to get the pics to show up any other way than a thumbnail sorry.

Are you going to complain about the gas tube? What's the guarantee if any?

'We have been given a confirmation of this but no landed time, so we are still waiting that at this time, thanks again. Scott"

For the price, I'll happily wait, okay maybe not so happily...

By gas tube latch is binding do you mean it's hard to pull it up and off? My Norinco is a pain, it won't come off unless the handguard latch is in just the right position. Keep trying until you get it. If you shoot corrosive ammo and you don't clean in there you will be very, very sad...

The tube slips on and off perfectly fine, its the actual latch. It was a little stiff twisting it into position to take the tube off the first time, but after cleaning it I went to lock the gas tube back into place and the latch wouldn't lock. Looking at it the little metal lip that rotates to lock the gas tube is actually hitting the face of the tube rather than gliding over top of it. Out by a few millimeters

One word of caution on carbon fiber rods, if you ever get one stuck in a barrel and need to gently tap it out with a mallet, you will likely shatter it.

Benchrest buddies of mine in the States won't touch them for that reason.

I use Dewey or Bore Tech rods.

Longtime thread watcher first time poster. I just received my two SKS's from Frontier. Got a hand select and a shooters grade, at first look it was hard to tell which one was which. One had a matched stock and no visible pencil marks, the other the opposite. So I thought the first was the HS, after getting them apart, I now think the opposite. Either way neither are perfect and both turned out to be rebuilds. So here they are, you guys can tell me what you think.

First one:

1952 Tula, rebuild marked with square with diagonal slash, all numbers matching including stock. Electro-pencil marking on the under side of the gas tube, piston, extractor. Bayonet is shiny.

Rough overall condition, stock is pretty dinged up and the shellac is coming off in areas. Receiver and rear sight base are corroded under the stock. Rust is visible in the chamber but it doesn't feel rough. The face of the stock through bolt is pitted as well. Has been fired, pitting on the piston and ring on the bolt face. Bore is mirror shiny and but has tooling marks near the muzzle.

Here are some pics

Second one:

1954 Izhevsk, rebuild with double diamond pattern marking, all numbers matching, forced matching on the stock, old number XX'd out. Double diamond stamped into the stock on the underside near the grip. Electro-pencil marking on the side of gas tube, piston, extractor, and under the rear sight. Bayonet is a a rough, dull finish.

New condition, never fired, not a mark on any of the internals. Piston and bolt faces are perfect. Chamber is nice and black but there is a scratch, almost like it was gouged with something. It's rough, I can feel it catch the edge of the bore light. The finish on the receiver has weird spots to it.

I'm assuming the 1952 is the shooters grade, and the 1954 is the hand select. I have to say I was a little disappointed that they were both refurbs but I'll survive because the 1954 is nice enough. I wouldn't have said it was hand select condition nor is it original although it is unfired. Is this pretty consistent with what others are finding?

I tried taking apart my refurb yesterday... and I found that I can't separate the action from the stock. I put it upside down, and literally put all my weight to it, and it won't come apart. Kinda stupid.. but whatever, it's in really good condition.. I'm lucky there. I just hope the parts where I can't see aren't rusted.

If your bayonet has been opened half way and your cleaning rod, trigger group and magazine have been removed there is nothing but friction holding your action into the stock.

Wow, those are the best pics ever. You are a great photographer. Amazing detail. I am supposed to be getting mine tomorrow. I will need photography tips. The first one is rough, you should bubba it. Get a stock and scope and make one like mine. lol. Hope you have fun shooting them.
Kirkm: Maybe file that slanted part a bit??

Yep.. that's pretty much how it is. It's on there really really tight. I'm kind of out of ideas. The only thing left to do really, is to put it in a vice, and hammer it out... but I'm not gonna do that, so I guess I'll just leave it like this. The bad thing is... I cleaned the thing in boiling water and I can't dry out the parts of the action I can't get to. It seems to be fine though... no rust on the parts I can see.
