M14 will not fire please help!!

Hi Everyone,

I took my M14 to test it out today. I loaded it with Federal 150g 308, cocked it, pulled the trigger, nothing happend, reapeated it like 15 times still nothing, the hammer cocks, makes a sounds when the trigger is pulled but no boom!

I got it new from CRAFM, cleaned off the goop, didn't take it appart, it was fairly clean, I am stressed beyond belief here, please help.
 
sounds to me that either there's something wrong with the firing pin or the bolt is not going completely into battery when readied to fire.
check the bolt out but don't take it apart unless you really know what you're doin'...
 
I compared it with another M14 and the firing pins look the same, I really don't know what I'm doing, I'm trying to take it apart but the trigger mechanism seems to be really stuck in there.
 
Luc, the firing pin might be slightly shorter than another and this it's not hitting the primer. I've heard of this happening in other types of firearms that don't have good quality control. If you can maybe swap the firing pin for another one?
 
for trigger mech:

#### gun (unloaded,right?)
turn gun upside down and pull on trigger guard.
trigger guard should lift up(hinged).
pull up on guard,if it dosen't come out,take a small screwdriver with a thick rag or small piece of wood as protection--pry up from where trigger guard clicks into trigger group(CAREFULLY,rock a bit as you pry--wood swells around trigger group)...
should lift out and you should not have problems after that...

This is an important point. When you've cocked it back, make sure you let go of the cocking handle, rather than riding it forward with your hand. If you don't do this, it may not engage fully, and bolt face will not be flush with the cartridge, and pulling the trigger may not actually make this fire.

I will try that but I won't know if thats it until next time at the range, how far should the firing pin come out? mine is barely out when being cocked.

I will try the dissassembly again tomorrow once I'm a bit rested, I have just got back from a 4.5 hour drive to the cottage, trust me it wasn't a fun drive home after this happend.
 
Here we are on the last day of January...what was the outside temp? The bolt comes heavily lubricated when you first get the rifle out of the box.

A couple of minutes at -10 C and the firing pin will be locked in place by the very thick lubricant. I had this happen in my 1895G, although at substantially cold temperatures (-30 C)

Dump the bolt in a bucket of varsol and soak all the lube out. (Or simply drown it in WD40 to float away the heavy lube) Bet it works then.

Umm..umm.umm....maybe the firing pin is just freezing up from a bunch of oil and crud in there?? If it was me i would disassemble above said rifle and take the bolt mechanism and face it downwards and check the firing pin protrusion once its warmed up...
 
s**t I should have posted 12 minutes sooner....oh well^^^^I agree with the above said comment, by ipsc dee doddle fella..firing pin is probably freezing due to global warming...

Can you take the bolt of the rifle and push the firing pin all the way forward and take a picture of the protruding firing pin?

Sorry Man...me was drunk and fingers werent workin real good on the key board..But I still agree,probably the firing pin is all gummed up and a good cleaning/soaking will take care of it.

I woke up rested and hopeful, I will attemp to wrestle to get the trigger group out as soon as my wife goes over to her parents for the afternoon, spending the day at the cottage yesterday and wanting spend more time on guns today isn't going over very well.

I took a .22 and a 12 guage with me as well to the cottage, the M14 was sitting in the cold for about 1.5 hours before I got to it, I know I know should have shot it first.......... but I had my brother with me and 2 friends and I didn't want to start them up on the M14 (first time shooters).

Another thing that I did wrong was I didn't let go of the oprod freely, I slid it forward slowly............ I know Newb mistake, so I feel hopeful that after a day in a nice warm house I can maybe get away for an hour once my wife is gone and just fire off one shot to test out the gun properly.

If that doesn't work, I will be back on here to get more help.

I really appreciate all the help, now I know why I joined the Nutters.

I wouldn't really call letting the rod forward slowly a "newb mistake" as in my manual is explains that when using "civilian" ammunition the primers are lighter and by letting the rod slam forward could set a round off. Granted they are full of crap (if your gun has all the proper spacings).
