Russian SKS45 long thread.

Ok you guys from Montreal. Call Baron sport/Sail in Pointe-Claire, they have 5 Rusky SKS's. I have no idea how much, or if they are even on the shelves yet, but they do have them. I saw one that was a refurb and was not all matching and the mag was mutilated, so I did not even bother looking at the others, and I just spent my $$$ on a new Marlin from a CGN dealer :D

I believe all the baron stores( there is 5 I believe) got a few SKS's, so maybe you will be lucky by checking a cpl different stores and find a nice one.

Good luck!!

Pointe-Claire and Kirkland are my favorite parts of montreal..... only places I didnt get dirty looks for speaking english and not french (downtown/east side I got dirty looks a lot)

which parts of the sks need to be cleaned EACH time it is fired to prevent corrosion issues?

With corrosive ammo, ALL OF IT!!! Even the "outside" metal, like near the muzzle of the gun will corrode if you don't wash it down with hot water, scrub clean and oil!!! I got burned ONCE by corrosive ammo, NEVER again!!!

I fully expect to start seeing corrosive ammo damaged Russian SKS rifles in the EE... Mark my words...

Cheers
Jay

for those who are concern about using corrive ammo then i would recommend you choose the following.

1. buy mid 1951 to 55/56 bcos it has chrome bore.
2. you can buy 1949- mid 1951 but make sure its been refurb and the non-chrome bore has been replaced with chrome .
3. buy a refurb SKS that has additional protection of black paint on the metal (look for black bayo and/or carrier) .

----and treat it like your shooting Black Powder, and as above, Clean it Well !!!

My baby is home

Woo-hoo

I picked her up on the way home. 1955/1956 Tula. No date stamp, Star on left side of receiver. Laminated stock is on it's 2nd rifle, Trigger assy forced matched, and gas tube is on it's 3rd rifle. Paint is a little beat up, stock is in need of refinishing, no rust, bore a little dull, but it needs a good scrubbing. I striped it down, scrubbed it good and gave it a nice shine with G96. It is a shooter, but it is pretty.

When I refinish the stock, I think it would look cool in a nice Wine or Burgundy.
What do you think?

Thanks BWEST.

It is a shooter, not a collectible. The stock is not really badly beat up, but there is a big area on the left side that the shellac is scraped off. I am not sure if I want the stock to be a funky color or keep it the same.

corrosive ammo scares the bejesus outa me, but its soo cheap! I'll probably end up shooting a pile of it in the morning and then cleaning relegiously all afternoon. I dont know, maybe I'll shoot the corrosive throught the norinco, clean that and see how it goes first. My ruskie is a non matching refurb but it's like new inside and I dunno if I can bear to shoot corrosive in it.

---- I have seen damage done, in just a few hours, best to clean as soon as possable, and Never leave it till the Next Day !! ---- That what I do anyway.

That's bull.

I agree, clean as soon as possible, but corrosive ammo will not eat your rifle in a few hours. I know this from experience as well as logic. What happened if you were in the middle of a battle that was 4-5 hours long? The rifles wouldn't rot out that fast and they don't. That much, I do know.

Edit:

Just clean your rifle when you get home from the range and you will be okay. Some people are pretty anal and even clean it at the range. If you thoroughly clean your rifle, you will be okay.

Some of you need to read up on the hundreds of threads and stickies on corrosive ammo. Its not going to attack your rifle with in minutes or hours. It depends on humidity levels, which is why some folks say they have not cleaned after many weeks, and others say within a week they saw rust. It all depends on the conditions of where you live.

I have a 1950, non chrome barrel and I have had no problem, as have those people who have non chrome Yugo's. The only thing I would say is, if your going to shoot only a couple rounds, it may not be worth all the cleaning you have to do.

The fun part about a SKS is the fact you can strip down the rifle to each individual part without tools, so this makes it very easy to field strip.
