Well, Which forum do you discuss the m14/m305? Same goes with the mini-14. If it is not discussed in the black rifles forum, I didn't feel the need to add it to the black rifles list. Technically the type 97 shouldn't be on there I don't think, because all talk for it goes on in the red rifles forum.
I think its time I run off and hide .. but I certainly wish we had a sanctuary around these parts to discuss all things mini14.Bermuda uses the Mini-14 as a service rifle.
Sadly, you even breath the word mini14 around these parts, and you get 1000 posts about how innaccure they are and how much they suck.
Yes from couch commandos and gun whores that have an AR or a SIG with a fake Aimpoint.... Its funny how these people are self proclaimed snipers - who knows if they even go to the range or just sleep with their superb rifle.
The Mini is a great gun... <4" at 100M

I too find that it is a fantastic entrenching tool.
"Accuracy of an AK-47, reliability of an M16!"
I have one of the new 580 models with the heavier tapered barrel. It easily shoots 2" - even when hot. Handloads go into a tidy inch. Never seen it jam. In Canada it is a good idea. Of course we would all have AR's under the seat of our trucks if it were allowed in Canada, but the fact is - it isn't, so the new Mini is a great little gun. Mine is stainless and sees minimal maintenance, and always works. With a 4x scope I dump every coyote and wild boar I see with it.
... the factory specifies (maybe guarentees?) 2 MOA. I have seen articles that will attest to anywhere between 3 and <1 MOA depending on ammo. We'll see after the weekend. But that is quite good in my books.I'm wondering if you may know this...
Can I replace my mini barrel with the new heavier one (I believe it is called the NRA series)?
Thanks

AWOL, that is a good question, and I have heard a number of people ask that very thing, but, unfortunately, I don't have the answer. The receiver on the new 580 is even a little different than the older mini's so who knows? I have managed to get an older mini (184 series) to shoot under 2" with the addition of a "Har-Bar". It stabilizes the barrel to keep it from whipping so drastically. Practically eliminates fliers, acts as a heat sink, and tightens groups. There is something else out there too called an, "Accu-strut". Heard good reviews of those too. These add-ons are pricey, but when you consider what people spend to buy stuff to add to their $1500 AR 15 just to get it to look the way they want so they can be a poser at the range, a few extra bucks to make the mini 14 better in the field is worth it.
There will always be teenaged gun snobs out there that will tell you how the six mini 14's they have owned wouldn't shoot. Bottom line is that it is a decent little gun - especially the new ones - and in Canada with its ridiculous gun laws - they are a viable choice. Hey, who wouldn't own at least one AR if they weren't restricted? and especially if neutered magazines weren't required? Heck, my FN used to be my favorite hunting rifle until idiotic gun control came in.
In all my years of policing, I have never encountered a crime that involved one of the rifles now on the restricted list.
Mine is a 580 so it's likely my "technique" that's failing
My Remington 700 in 270 make tighter groups for me. I typically place 4 rounds inside 3.5" at 100 yds. I am a highly experienced hack when it come to target shooting. Typically I'm too impatient to be anal about groups so I use store ammo and sometimes even the cheap stuff which I'm sure has its effect.
Thanks for the info
+1 a lithgow actually, but i digressHeck, my FN used to be my favorite hunting rifle until idiotic gun control came in.
