Ordering and scoping a Savage rifle -- what to expect for non Savage owners..

I had the .300 win mag version of the 116fcss, and I was shooting .87 inch 3 shot groups with reloads. (200 gr accubonds over 70.5 gr of reloader 19) I love the accuracy of the gun, but the only gripe I had was the distance between the scope bases (its really far apart). I mounted a 3200 Bushnell Elite 3-9x40 and I had NO eye relief (even with 1 extension ring) And I had to grind out a v-shaped portion on that extension ring so the bell housing could get clearance. It was a nightmare. I tried to switch scopes to the Burris fullfield II 3-9x but it was the same,
So what I am saying is that you should REALLY MAKE SURE THE SCOPE YOU ARE PLANNING TO MOUNT ON A LONG ACTION 116 has enough scope tube to give you a bit of choice in how much eye relief you have. When I mounted the 3200, I touched my eyebrow several times with the scope, Even the guys at the gunstore I bought it at had a hard time finding rings and bases that would accomodate a normal sized scope.
Other than that , it shot like a house on fire. All my friends gave up trying to beat me at 100 yards.

Wow, sgt.rock, that's the kind of thing I've been wondering about. I'm wanting a 30-06 for the versatility, but the long action has me concerned. A 308 will do all that a 30-06 will, but I like the idea of that little bit extra, plus I like the history of the cartridge (I know, I'm weird that way).
I'll chek out what I can on the website on the american classic, hopefully the spacing on the bases is less (highly doubt it). I've been back and forth 30-06 and 308, this might be the point that settles it. But I so like the idea of carrying a 30-06... :yingyang:

Dont get me wrong, it can be done, you just need a store with better selection than I had , and a bit of patience. Maybe using 2 extension rings instead of 1 would have worked better. But whatever scope you do end up settling on, measure the "inside area" - the tube portion after the eye piece and before the front bell housing. That is your working area for the rings. I sold the gun so I don't have access to the length you need to fit into the rings. I regret selling it, because it really was my most accurate rifle I have owned. But I bought a .308, a .338 , and a .444 marlin so I needed cash to pay for them and I knew the Savage would be easier to sell, and it sold quickly. The caliber choices I went with left the .300 win mag as the odd man out.
(P.S. If you get the .30-06 - which would be my choice if I had my time back, make sure to get a decelerator recoil pad. The super light weight of the rifle makes her jump about with medium to heavy loads. My friend has one and I found recoil surprisingly stout with the stock pad. It was solved instantly with the upgraded pad)

Thanks sgt rock. I'm still deciding, might end up with 308 just for the short action, I dont have good selection locally and proper eye relief is a must for me, I want a natural pointer for quick shots. It gets worse, I was playing with a t3 hunter today, loved it. It looks way better in person than in pics and it feels great. trigger was awesome too, I liked it far better than the accutrigger I tried, but it might have been an adjustment thing as the tikka was lighter, they mught have set it down at the shop.

The tikka bolt was far smoother, the savage could bind if pushed up slightly when closing the bolt. The tikka was smooth throughout, both were 30-06. And the tikka bolt handle doesnt go up near the scope, another plus IMO as I hate the look of savages oversized bolt handles.
SO many guns, so little money, I might just watch the EE for another tika like the 308 that sold a few days ago.
But the tikka hunter price makes remington and winchester options... the t3 lite has such an ugly stock, i'd probably as soon spring the extra $130 or so for the wood.

edit: Thanks manbearpig, this is string gives valuable information for those (like me) thinking hard an a new savage!

BTW I ended up getting a savage 114 American Classic in 30-06. Put burris sig zees first then switched to millet extension rings to get the bushnell 4200 3x9 back a little closer to my eye, those savage actions are loooong.
Love the gun, shoots 180gr bullets well. But I still want a tikka, they just seem to fit me better...

woah, 3 years all ready, seems like yesteryear I was reading this thread.

Hey Manbearpig, why don't you give us a photo update with pics of the work you did to that stock and a couple pics of your best groups with the rifle.

:)

I liken Savage rifles to the not-so-pretty girl who can cook, clean, and is a demon in the sack. The other guys with their high-maintainence women can laugh and sneer all they want but they just have no idea how good we Savage owners got it

:pYou've made my day. I gotta' remember that one. I have one Savage bolt gun, inexpensive, decent glass,

And it sure can shoot:D. Good bang for the buck:cool:.
