I find .40 snappier than .45 so I prefer 9mm and .45 for my handguns.
YMMV.
i found that too,, 40 just doesnt do it for me, now if 40 ammo prices were less then maybe . but they are too close to 45 for me to care, i would like to try the 357sig, which a drop in barrel is only needed for the 40. then you have 2 cals. on one gun. but 357sig is quite expensive for what it is. to me anyway. then again i dont reload yet. ... so for now 9mm and 45. .
Ive shot the .357 sig, it's about as recoil heavy as a .40, probably slightly more. I really like it.

I don't get it. While I'm not criticizing those who claim that a .40 is too "snappy", why then would you bother using anything but a .22 for target shooting? $2.50 for 50 rounds, seems like a no-brainer to me. The guys in Iraq and Afghanistan don't seem too pleased with 9 mm, many cop forces in Canada & the US are switching over to 40 or 45. So what's the justification for buying a handgun in 9mm? Except maybe the cost of 9mm surplus ammo? I dunno, I can understand the case for those who can't afford more than one or two handguns. But for those spoiled brats such as myself....
First handgun I ever bought was a .45. Shot over 1000 rounds over a month or so 'till the recoil was as insignificant to me as a door slamming shut repeatedly. End of story. For me. I love 40 & 45. I own a 9mm too, but don't use it much.
LOL, but that's the point. If you're shooting only for target practice and don't see your handgun as a defensive tool at all, why not just plink away with a .22?
I'm sure I'm over-simplifying, but I target shoot to hone my skills. With a firearm that I would use in case those pesky Zombies ever came to my neck of the woods![]()

If you ever want to shoot ipsc, 9mm is a minor calibre and you lose more points for off hits. 40 is a major and you don't lose the points. Correct me if i'm wrong.
The mags on the 9mm blow c*ck with their plastic bottom mags that makes the 10th rouund impossible to load. For that reason alone I'd grab the .40, I've owned both..the black 40 is a real piece of ass.
