I am looking at buying a Sig 226 and I like shooting the 9mm, however, I am curious as to how the .40 cal performs. Which would be the better choice?

Depends on what type of shooting you are doing. 9mm is cheaper to reload, probly not as snappy a recoil either. Ive got several 226s all in 9mm,got rid of the .40s cuz I just like 9 better. Alot of it is your preferrence!

I find .40 snappier than .45 so I prefer 9mm and .45 for my handguns.

YMMV.

i found that too,, 40 just doesnt do it for me, now if 40 ammo prices were less then maybe . but they are too close to 45 for me to care, i would like to try the 357sig, which a drop in barrel is only needed for the 40. then you have 2 cals. on one gun. but 357sig is quite expensive for what it is. to me anyway. then again i dont reload yet. ... so for now 9mm and 45. .

WolFF's point on the drop in barrel is what made me decide on the .40 p226.

A .40 p226 can be converted to .22, .9mm or a 357 with new barrels and appropriate mags.

The 9mm version can't be converted to a .40 or 357. This was the only reason for me going with the .40 version over the 9mm.

Depending on your needs, this may be something to consider.

I like the versatility. :D

Ive shot the .357 sig, it's about as recoil heavy as a .40, probably slightly more. I really like it.

i cant find anywhere that carries .357sig ammo. what sorta prices is one looking at for factory rounds box or bulk ?

ive called a few places, but they throw the "ahhh 40bux a box" at me

DEFINITELY more. I've heard people say they get less felt recoil in .357Sig than .40S&W... but I'd like to know what pistol they are shooting it out of. In my 229, .357Sig sure feels, looks and sounds way more badass.

I believe I payed something like 33$ or 35$ per box for Speer GoldDot HP from P&D.

As to the original question of 9mm or .40S&W... The answer is, of course, 10mm. :D

I don't get it. While I'm not criticizing those who claim that a .40 is too "snappy", why then would you bother using anything but a .22 for target shooting? $2.50 for 50 rounds, seems like a no-brainer to me. The guys in Iraq and Afghanistan don't seem too pleased with 9 mm, many cop forces in Canada & the US are switching over to 40 or 45. So what's the justification for buying a handgun in 9mm? Except maybe the cost of 9mm surplus ammo? I dunno, I can understand the case for those who can't afford more than one or two handguns. But for those spoiled brats such as myself....

First handgun I ever bought was a .45. Shot over 1000 rounds over a month or so 'till the recoil was as insignificant to me as a door slamming shut repeatedly. End of story. For me. I love 40 & 45. I own a 9mm too, but don't use it much.

Yup your right, for self defence a .40 or .45 is probly the way to go. I think we are talking target shooting (correct me if we are not), affodability, and preference. If your going to shoot enough center fire pistol 9mm is likly far cheaper to buy or reload than than .40/.45

LOL, but that's the point. If you're shooting only for target practice and don't see your handgun as a defensive tool at all, why not just plink away with a .22?

I'm sure I'm over-simplifying, but I target shoot to hone my skills. With a firearm that I would use in case those pesky Zombies ever came to my neck of the woods :p

I cant shoot or compete in PPC, DUTY, or DISTINGUSHED and lots of other disiplines with a .22 cal.! However I can with a 9mm,.40,.45...lots of us choose to shoot a 9mm for all of the reasons previously mentioned.

I wont comment on the Zombies.

Because there is more to pistol shooting "then just plink away...."

For self defense all the calibers mentioned work well be it 9MM, 40 or .45acp.

For playing the shooting sports such as IDPA/IPSC then 9MM, 40 & .45acp all make good sense. Just depends on what divsion you want to shoot in and with what.

For the budget minded or the non-reloader the 9MM is much cheaper to shoot.

Take Care

The mags on the 9mm blow c*ck with their plastic bottom mags that makes the 10th rouund impossible to load. For that reason alone I'd grab the .40, I've owned both..the black 40 is a real piece of ass.

If you ever want to shoot ipsc, 9mm is a minor calibre and you lose more points for off hits. 40 is a major and you don't lose the points. Correct me if i'm wrong.

Everyone is scored minor in Production Division. The stock Sig P226 is a Production Divison pistol, so no loss of points against the others who may be shooting a .40.

Either or......

I'd likely get a .40 due to the relative & plentiful supply of once fired .40 S&W brass locally. But a 9mm would work just as well for me since all I'd be doing with it is punching paper....... ;)
