size of animals on tv hunting shows

now i am not one of those guys that can look at a deer and say it scores 170 or whathaveyou, but i was watching some mule deer hunting on tv the other night, and when they walked up on the downed deer, the guide said "looks like he's 34 inches wide", the host said "no, i'd say about 28 inches".

i would guess the deer was about 22 inches wide. that is a long ways from 34 inches or even 28.

anybody else notice things like this in hunting media?
 
And fishing, etc...

Ever notice how the fishing host always holds the fish out in front of him as close to the camera as possibe? Remember the bear and boar hoaxes on the internet in recent years?

Business is dependant on selling the best product, and TV leaves a lot of room to fudge.
 
They are on TV to make money, and will go all the way to make sure they do. I'm sure if they showed their entire film, they probably wouldn't be any different than me or you. That deer down, might of took a years worth of footage...who knows! I've also seen some bow hunting shows, where they have taken some really BAD shots...and low and behold...they are posing with the animal, a few minutes later. Take the shows for what they are, entertainment.
 
I dont know, I watched that Jack Bittinghams North American Big Game Hunts (the number escapes me), and anyway, it was the one where he took the at the time world record sized Grizzly Bear taken with a bow, and I dont care how you frame it. That was one huge bear. But besides his movies, there are a few Ive seen that have some sad looking deer on them.
 
I don't really care what size animal they kill, just call it what it is. If you are ashamed of taking a smaller animal, then dont' pull the trigger in the first place.
 
Fishing is the worst. Ive guided walleye, pike, and bass. I know how to estimate size and weight pretty damn well.

I hate it when a host reels in a pike and blahs on and on how its like 25 pounds, when I would have called maybe 12-14. Theirs no length, no girth, just a little rail.

The one where the scuba divers were hooking fish? :D

I used to like the Angler And Hunter show with the old host. If he didn't shoot anything, it was ok. And if he shot an everyday, regular buck it was a trophy. Too many shows emphasize too much on the killing, not the hunting, regardless of the cost. My absolute favorite, most ignorant thing was on Canada in the Rough. Guest host was pheasant hunting and walking through a field with the camara behind and slightly off side. A pheasant appears from the top of the frame as he yell's "THERE'S ONE!" and promptly brings his shotgun up. The bird, which I repeat appeared from the top of the frame is flapping like a lunitic, yet he's dropping right in fron of the shooter. Said shooter fires his first shot and misses. The bird now only a couple feet in front of him and a couple feet above the ground is hit with his second shot. That disgusted me, both the fact that they treated the animal like that, (Clipping it's wings and throwing it like a football) and the fact that they put it on television thinking the public is too stupid to catch on to that kind of behaviour.

I'm glad I missed that episode. In fact, I tend to watch the end of the show for the cooking segment. I don't need to watch them shoot small black bears and call them trophies.:rolleyes:

personality was charged with catching 10 bass before the
season opened...

TELEVISION fishing stars Henry Waszczuk and Italo Labignan had their Outdoor Writers of Canada (OWC) memberships revoked at the organization's annual membership meeting in late May, held in Victoria, BC.

OWC guidelines of professional conduct state,"Members should never violate fish, game, conservation, or environmental laws or regulations." Waszczuk and Canadian Sportfishing co-host Labignan pleaded guilty on five illegal fishing charges in just over one month and paid $3,400 in fines. The pair were each fined $800 on April 3 in Trenton court for foul-hooking Trent River whitefish in November 1995 and rehooking them in the mouth for filming. Labignan was also fined another $200 for hooking another angler's out-of-season lake trout to his own line and recording it being brought in.

In Peterborough court April 16, Waszczuk pleaded guilty to fishing for bass out of season near Minden on June 16, 1995. He was fined $800. On May 4, Waszcuk was fined another $800 for fishing salmon on October 13, 1995, in a Bronte Creek closed area.

I normally reduce anything a fisherman says by 1/3. 10 pounders usually weigh about 6 1/2. 2 pounder "eater" walleye are about 1 1/4.
Hunting isn't much different. 400 yard shots might be 250, gross scores will be given in the hopes that you will think he means net and every WT buck that isn't a forkhorn is a "140 class" especially if he "passed it up". "Passed it up" might mean "didn't have a chance", "saw it from the truck", or it was on posted land.
Once you understand the code, hunter speak is easy to follow.
 
Anyone catch that show on wild TV yesterday filmed in Quebec? I didn't catch the name of the show. It was on shooting woodcock and grouse. They had a wirehaired pointing griffon. A husband and wife were shooting over the dog, but they were shooting the grouse on the ground and out of trees. Didn't seem very sporting. Is that common in Quebec? I was brought up to never ground swat or take them out of trees with a shotgun.
