size of animals on tv hunting shows

I agree with Gatehouse. Kill what you're comfortable with; either hunt for trophies or food. I have shot big and small animals. I'm not ashamed of any of them because I ate them all.

More power , bigger , better , improved....
...works good for laundry soap too

No kiddin' ... ever notice how tall & delicious those Burger King,
Wendy's & Big Mac's are on T.V. ... and how flat and
uanappetizing they are once they're all wrapped up for you !

.... "Food Stylists" - just to make it look good.

I actually wouldn't mind seeing them take smaller animals and "management" bucks. I would also like to see a little more on the shows about how they are utilizing the animals. The cooking segments from CITR and Hunt Fish Cook leave a lot to be desired. They forget that most of us hunt for meat and while the meat hunters don't usually throw the cash around like some trophy hunters, we are still a market they could tap into.

I'm with you, sjemac. I would love to see a maagement buck taken.

What really makes me angry is when you see a younger buck with a big rack taken over an older buck with a smaller or odd antlers. The older, mature buck would be the logical choice for a meat hunter.

Are you ok with a hunting host grinding a herd of small mule deer up against a busy road, shooting a small buck for the kill shot, then calling it a management buck even though there is no management program at all in the area?

I watched a show tonight but I can't for the life of me remember what it was called. It was a couple of buddies bear hunting in the spring somewhere in the states. Anyways it was a good show even if they the both missed! It was a decent show and these guys took it in stride but they both went home with tags un-cut. I thought it was pretty cool to show the misses rather than the glory! It was obvious they still had a good time...

Of course I'm not Ok with that. But I'm also not OK with canned hunts. And that is what these programs are all about. There's alot of things that go on in those TV shows that I don't agree with, but ratings are ratings and I kind of understand what they're trying to accomplish. I'm just saying that to see them take a management buck once in a while is OK by me.

I hear where you're coming from. It seems from the few shows I've seen that the appearance of a successful hunt is what the audience desires. Factor in the pressure of sponsors and the gigantic ego's of the people who want to present themselves as the experts and it's not surprising we see poaching, lies and questionable ethics.

On the Excaliber Crossbow site we see the words:

At Excalibur, we aren't big business cashing in on crossbow hunting, we're crossbow hunters who build crossbows".

You can also watch their "exciting" Elephant with a crossbow vid.

I would imagine you could kill a Whale with a crossbow if the shot was just right but at what point does this just become a stunt to move product? With most hunters adhering to or usually exceeding, the accepted Africa minimum caliber, excaliber stirs the pot by supporting this activity and become crossbow hunters who sell crossbows.

So by that logic, the numerous elephants that have been killed with vertical bows were nothing more than sales stunts either? At some point I like to think people have passion for their method of hunting. I'd like to think old Fred Bear was more than a ego-driven salesman. While the owner of Xcal killed the first elephant with a crossbow, he hardly broke new ground or stirred any pots as it has been done many times with vertical bows. Really, he was just a follower.

I love watching hunting shows and glad that I have wild TV.
The old angler and hunter show sucked the new one's not that much better.

I shoot grouse on the ground, out of trees and in flight.
here in eastern Ontario you get a shot at one, you take it!

Management buck, big buck, doe, whatever I love watching people hunt but love to hunt more. It's entertainment and I take it for what it is.

That Jim Shockey, he shoots alot of small deer and moose what a pussy!

Which reminded me of this cartoon from the New Yorker a couple of years ago:

now i am not one of those guys that can look at a deer and say it scores 170 or whathaveyou, but i was watching some mule deer hunting on tv the other night, and when they walked up on the downed deer, the guide said "looks like he's 34 inches wide", the host said "no, i'd say about 28 inches".

i would guess the deer was about 22 inches wide. that is a long ways from 34 inches or even 28.

anybody else notice things like this in hunting media?

I have seen hunting shows on the dish, especially with bowhunting the shooter will be like "man, I nailed him" and its sometimes the worst shot you've ever seen

management bucks = high fences

I suppose if you take the meaning literally. For me, a management buck is one you take to get rid of some wonky horn genetics. We took a funked up one horned fork out of one of the areas I have permission on this year to get him out of the herd. There was no high fence there -- unless you count three strand barbed wire as "high".

I watch them more for entertainment and living vicariously during the off season. One fishing show I saw was actually kind of funny. Can't remember the guys name. He and his buddy were bass fishing, and it was a cloudy day. Catching alot of bass. Next shot, clear sunny day, catching alot of bass. They start making comments like, "Ain't it funny how the sky cleared up in just a few minutes?" "Yep. And look how much bass we be catching in just a half hour." "Yep. Must be that secret scent Berkley's gives us." "Yep." It was hilarious.
