Round one with the savage (so far dissapointed)

50 grain 25 cal bullet or 22 ?, you never did mention the cal on the Savage just the Remington. My experience with Savage/Stevens was good, The stevens .223 I had did very well with factory 55 grain ammunition, the groups only got bigger when the barrel got much hotter.

Either way I would try some heavier bullets.

>223 Rem

Good grief!

Not to put too fine a point on it, but try some different ammo.

Something with some longer bullets would be good, given the twist rate. Varmint Grenades, if you want gopher bullets. Reloads if you actually want some accuracy.

One box, of one kind of ammo, and it's no good? Perfect! I'll give you $100 shipped for the no good POS! :D

Cheers
Trev

If you read my post I am trying all that stuff the store I bought my rifle from only had that ammo and I am waiting on some pieces for reloading I was stating a first opinion not a final opinion

Alternatively, perhaps the Savage was choking on the Rem ammo!!!!!

Even some reloads will give you poor results depending on the combination of components.

Try again.

That first part actually made me lol :D good one I plan to try lots more and I will not give up trying is part of the fun isn't it. I have a feeling I was just too built up by internet stories that I expected a miricle. Iam sure I will find something it likes.

How are the barnes varmint grenades shooting for people? I have read some bad things but alas more internet hear say.

Have you had a chance to look at the bedding (or lack thereof) and how the action sits in the stock?

I am in the process of building a new Savage project and am starting with an 11FCNS. My synthetic stock has a very loose inletting. This thing needs to be bedded in a big way AND also bedded level.

If you torqued down the screws, you can bend the action into the stock. Not so good.

Once bedded properly and with handloads, there is a very good chance you will have a shooter on your hands.

Just watch the barrel heat.

My receipe that seems to work well in many Savage and stevens 223's, 75gr Amax or Berger over Varget or Benchmark lit by a CCI 450 or BR4 primer. Rem or Win cases will work. Just keep an eye on the seater to ensure those long bullets get seated straight.

Because I chose to own a 223 over 22-250 after burning out barrels like mad in my local gopher patch - I had a coule thousand 50 grain tnt's laying around. I didn't know that the savage 10fp I had just purchase would dislike light bullets....took me some tinkering around, I had to load the light bullets VERY slowed down to get them accurate. Good news is it's cheaper on powder, barrel fouls slower, I can beat on gophers 8 hours straight and not heat up the barrel so much as to change the bluing color/remove fingerprints/get the stock to smell funny, bad news is....ummmm yeah I can't think of any bad points.

As has been said - try heavier bullets, or try handloading slowing your light bullets down, start at the minimum load you can find and go from there.

I've had good success with 60gr. v-max in my VLP and recently tried some Varmint Grenades. The Varmint grenades are longer so you need to seat them a little deeper. I was getting about a 1.75" group at 300 yards with the Varmint grenades, with out the gun being bedded and on a cold, moderately windy day. Just bedded it this past weekend, we'll see how much of a difference it makes. I tried shooting Federal American Eagle 55gr. FMJ's and its worse than throwing a handful of rocks out to 100 yards.

I had a 10 FPLE that would not shoot! drove me nuts, with factory rifles its the luck of the draw....just as I have had rems do the same one would shoot sub moa the other would not.

I do have factory savages rifle that will shoot to standards any F-class BR shooter would except and have infact won a few events with them.

Just bought a 243 savage that will shot moa, not claiming BR accuracy but good, along with a 300 wsm.

They are a good starting piece of steel you can work them, like Jerry said , bed them! I have yet to see one that was fitted 100%, mine are all bedded.

I plan on ordering a laminate thumbhole for it so the bedding will wait for the new stock but yeah it's not a good fit now that I looked at it close.

I heard a good one this weekend. A buddy of mine has a savage in 204 ruger with the heavy bbl and laminate thumbhole stock. He could never get it to shoot properly and after close inspection he found a defect in the last 4 inches of rifling. He had the bbl cut back and recrowned. He showed me a 170 yd target that he shot post-op that looked like a single 22cal hole. Food for thought.

P.S. Ive got a couple savages and really like the way they perform.

I think you will find the reloading factor plays pretty much equal as the shooting ability does when it comes to accuracy

I have never had any kind of accuracy out of rifles with factory ammo, specialy the accuracy I expect

If in fact your scope and mounting is good and the group is approx 4.5 inches at 100 yards, call Savage at (413) 568-7001 They are great to deal with and customer service means alot to them.

Be sure to check the rifle over for proper assembly including the scope function and installation.

It just didn't like that remington ammo at all. I tried some hornady factory ammo and groups were around 1.5" at a 100. That is all the factory ammo this gun is going to see. I have a bunch of test rounds loaded up with 40gr blitz kings and 50gr Varmint grenades and well see what she can do as soon as the weather agrees.

To achieve the kind of groups one has come to expect from a Savage, you have to shoot a bunch of shots, pick out the best three, then put tape over the others and convince yourself they were the result of an unseen atmospheric disturbance. Regards, Bill.
