I own two, they are very accurate and perform better than some of my other M14s. Accuracy is not an issue...

If it was NON-restricted, I'd grab one...anyway, I love the fullsize M1A
Having had both the SOCOM II and the SOCOM 16... I can honestly say they were very reliable, but the II was way too front heavy for me. It is a beast.
In end, I sold em both due to the restricted status.. as so many other did.

i've been waiting for mine to arrive, i ordered it in april 08 (dimitri's favorite fn sports) and over 10 months later i'm still waiting.
while i'll be using solely as a fun gun and at ranges under 300 yards i don't think an optic would be practical in my case. if i were to look at an optic i would look for a decent scope with a variable 3x9.
a vendor on this site has a socom16 new for 2400.00 (reliable gun) in vancouver. my .02. get the 16 and put it in a jae stock, it apparently turns the socom into a tack driver.

not very in practical terms, its a 308 in a 16 inch barrel. yeah it'll get to 500 no problem but i'd want a large target lol.
it is designed for cqb and in good hands is more than adequate for gonging at 300 yards but any more than that you'd be better with a longer platform. my .02.
There is a common misunderstanding between barrel length and accuracy. With a shorter barrel you loose velocity, not accuracy. In fact, a shorter stiffer barrel is often more accurate. A shorter barrel does not mean less accurate, it means a greater bullet drop at longer ranges. If you have a bullet drop compensating turret on your scope....hey no biggy.
To answer the question, one of my SOCOMs is more accurate at 500m that a full length M1A that I have. The only difference is the drop is greater on the SOCOM due to the loss of velocity over the 22 inch barrel...
So in practical terms....yes, it is accurate at 500m particularly with handloads....

I assumed that this would be the case for the Socom at 500 meters. I was going to borrow my friends Socom 2 for a Service Match this year for the challenge. The low recoil intrigued me especially for the rapid shoot stage. Mind you, I do well shooting rapid with my 22" but when I tried his Socom and quickly noticed the dramatically reduced muzzle rise and recoil, I became very curious.

I would not describe it as a tack driver but would call it very good accuracy. I will have to dig up my notes on the difference in the bullet drop. 6 inches causes a healthy loss of velocity. If you have a bullet drop compensator on your scope, the bullet drop is not so noticable as you just dial in your 500m data. When you shoot with a red dot only, hitting the target gets to be a bit more challenging. I used a 10x scope in this case. The optics make a difference. This is when having a red dot that cowitnesses with iron sights is a must. You dial in your 500m data for your rear sight and have at it. Your red dot is for close range and your irons for longer. I really like a 1-4 that has a bullet drop compensator but unfortunately...they usually are the most expensive...
I find it very balanced and fun to shoot. It has alot of potential. My only issue is the restricted status.
