Summerland Long Range Fun Shoot - CANCELED, Sorry guys

What it is the interior diameter of those 'rings'? Need to know for the cross rods. Anyone tearing out some old plumbing?

Remember that many of the gongs have to be carried several hundred yds to set up. This is a no drive area except on established trails.

So keep an eye on weight. two man portable hopefully.

I will make some 2x4 frames with ability to put a cross rod through to hold up the gongs. My goal is to have these prepped Friday so we just have to put up the gongs Sat morning. Then they can be moved for Sunday.

Jerry

the rings are heavy wall pipe sections. IIRC, they are 3/4" ID (I dont have them here to measure, so perhaps Katana can confirm this dimension.) If so, a 3/4" rod would be just too tight,so a 5/8" rod would be better.
The large plate on the right has a second bar wedled in place crossways to the face of the main plate. That is drilled at 13/16", so a 3/4" round bar is perfect.

Oh, also, I was talking to Katana about what to do with them after the shoot.
Jerry, if you want to warehouse them until next years shoot, that is fine with me.
If not, then feel free to divide them all up afterwards. Fixit has already requested one of the small ones.

Sounds like rebar might be the least expensive available rod.

We will see what condition the gongs are like after the shoot. They might be shot up bad enough that scrap be the safest answer. Appreciate your help very much.

I will be in touch with the others that have offered to make a gong or two and see what our tally is.

Jerry

I just measured the holes and they are all the same, measuring at 20mm or 3/4 in. So I'm thinkin that 5/8 rod would do fine for but the BIG one. Most are light for the most part but the large one on the right of the photo weighs about 50 lbs!!! I'm just not sure that a piece of 5/8 think rebar would be strong enough to last the day. Round stock might be up to the task and I can try round some up but can not promise anything.

I'll like to thanks Tootall for fabing these up for us. He has obviously spent a fair bit of time working on something that he is not going to be able to use and donating to us.

Thumbs up, Tootall!!!

Thanks also to you for volunteering to carry them up to Summerland.:)

Yes that did occur to me also. In fact when K picked up the gongs, I showed him some others that are already softened up.:D

once you get out past 1000m the average rifle wont even pit the steel. i cant say for the 50cals because i dont have a lot of experience with them. we were shooting 1/4 inch steel at 1400yrds and the 338 barely did anything to it and my 300 just scratched it. i would try to put flatbar or angle iron on edge down the back side of your gongs. if you hit them enough they will start to curl. depending on size and thickness.

The .50's using amax probably wont do much more as they pretty much disintegrate on impact. If someone is shooting AP they should penetrate easily, FMJ's should put a real good buckle in it and should penetrate 1/4" without to much problem.

i live in kelowna and have a shop with a welder, cnc plasma, cut off saw and basically anything that has to do with fabricating metal. If you guys need anything at all, let me know. i can make just about anything you can think of. Also, jerry, if you need some more help for the weekend, let me know. i dont think im gonna have my 300rum put together by then so all i can do is watch anyway. I also have a 4x4 truck with a fullsize bed and pit tent as well.

knockturnal, I will be in touch shortly to discuss some gongs.

LRC, will be interested in seeing how the solids from ABC whack these gongs. I expect they will make a big dent at very long distances. The rock I smacked at 1400yds with the CT last spring sure dusted nice.

Mutt-roc, considering most will be shot from 800yds and in with up to BMG's, I just don't see alot of survivors by Sunday afternoon reinforcing or not.

tootall, again thanks. I will look around for rods/pipes and rebar to make up some stands.

Jerry

I just checked the scrap pile and I have 1 -6" round, 6-10" round and 1-14" round all out of 3/8 plate if you need them. Just let me know

I think that will take care of our gong needs.

Let's say the 6" (two would be nice), 3-10" and 1-14". Do you have any loops that we can weld on as rings?

I saw a simple tripod design using rebar and they made a hook out of the end. Then the gong was hung off this and was very stable.

Will be nice to have that where the gopher lives.

I will have to try and make it up there in the next bit and see what we can make up. What is a good time?

Thanks,

Jerry

i made a new gong that is on a spring so when u shoot it it flips down and then stands up. it has two different targets you can put on it one is a oversized gopher and the other is a house cat. i can send it up with one of the shooters coming from edmonton.
for stands i would make a swingset A frame type setup. they work slik
let me know

I can also make shapes as well. If you can think of any fun shapes to shoot at, let me know and I'll see what I can do. If I had an extra sheet kicking around, I'd make a full sized deer or something and set it wayout there

I'm still sad your not coming. I'm going to fill up my slip tank in my truck with those ice cap thingy's you like so much and run some surgical tube through the back window, you can sip up that cr!p all the way to BC!!!

I'll haul whatever you need out that way. Have lots of room.
