Fun stuff. I missed this thread the first time around. I'll post a few pictures of some of my father's boxes. Most of us remember the Imperial line, but did you know it was only one of four grades of shells they made at one time? Here they are, Regal, Crown, Sovereign, and Imperial.
Here are a couple of old Canucks, a Meteor, and Imperial.

You don't see too many of these display boxes. Each has the matching normal sized box on top.

Had another collector down here ask if any of my Remington .22rf boxes of ammo were made in Canada. He said they're much more rare than any othe normal US Rem boxes. I had NO idea what he was talking about.
While working on cataloging my boxes I ran across this old, beat-up Remington box, then happened to notice the headstamps were the intertwined G belonging to Gevelot!!!
This is the SIDE panel. Top and other side are pretty ratty. Anyone got one of these Candian boxes they want to part with. I'm pretty sure I can find matching GG headstamped ammo to refill it if it's empty.
(Weird!! US ammo brand, Canadian [French] headstamped, label says it's made in Mexico!?!?!?!?!?)

Never thought I would ever say this but, "I miss IVI"
Their rimfire ammunition went bang when you pulled the trigger. Something that Winchester and Remington .22 shells have a habit of not doing now a days
The only thing IVI did that I never cared about much was their shotgun shells.
Always loved the smell of fired Dominion/Canuck paper shells. They have a burnt wax smell that you never forget.

That box 0f Remington .22 ammo is from the 1970s, that factory was a joint venture between Remington (49%) and a group headed up by Jorge Aleman (51%).... they made alot of the Remingtom ammo of the time, including some "saniitized" military ammo for special clients.
The factory also produced a lot of Auto Mag ammo for Lee Juras and company back in the USA.
That factory is still producing but is now using the name of Aguila.

That small box of shotshells Francialux was imported in the early1960s by Tom Higginson (Andrew Higginson's uncle) as they were made for him by Cartouchrie Francaise....
Many calibers, many loads, several types of shot.... If you get the chance try some with nickel plated shot, something else

Thanks for that info johnone. I've been looking for an established timeline for the Dominion to CIL to IVI to US firm but without any luck so far. I began research back in the '80s on the various logos and brand names Dominion/CIL had used up to that time.
Was interrupted by family illenss with our elderly parents back here in the States so had to move back down here to help them. Have got some interesting notes stashed away about dating the old "Beaver" and "Bent D" trademarks.
I keep hoping someone will publish a book about the company. No luck so far.
If you can furnish some dates on that company timeline, I'd be most appreciative.

John, I collect only boxes of .22rf ammo made in US and Canada. If you have any such items to sell off I would be interested. Unfortunately, I've only found ONE guy in Canada who has managed to sell and ship to me full boxes of ammo. He lives fairly close to the 49th parallel but as I recall his packages were always ADDRESSED from Canada. I foolishly forgot to check the packages for more info.

European oldies
I've had these old timey European .22rf boxes around for about 40 years now. When you talk about ammo packaging look at how these guys packed their .22s.
Note the DOUBLE separation layers to keep BOTH ends of each cartridge away from its neighbor. And the end flaps come all the way across, meeting in the middle when the drawer is slid shut, protecting the rounds inside.
Not real colorful, but LOTS of info printed on every surface! I think they're neat.

Thanks, when you get into this kind of vintage the prices kinda takes the fun out of it. The 25-36 Marlin is somewhere in the $150 range(full) The 45-70's are around $50 for a good empty and full in the $125-$150 range, the sealed one would have a premium, the 40-60 is quite common and might get you $150 full, The 45-85 EX empty would be in the $300-$350 range and the black powder 50-110 EX in that condition would range around $400+ empty and as much as $1200 full. This is what a collector valued these at for me and in US dollars, sadly there is no real market up here for this kind of stuff except for those who want a deal and then take them down south. Iv'e only held on to these to go with my lever rifles. If I told you what I have shot over the years you would cry. I even shot original 45-85 Bullard when I got that rifle, oh well it was fun at the time.
When I lived in Victoria,BC back in the '70s and traveled Vancouver Island for a publisher, I got into every gun shop, sporting goods, pawn shop, hardware store, and anyplace else that might have old ammo boxes. I asked an employee at an old hardware in one of the small up-island towns - I forget which - and he said I was welcome to go down in the basement and check what they had stacked down there.
I found a HUGE stash of VERY old boxes with the original ammo still in them! Both US and Canadian brands. All I was interested in was the 22rf and passed up dozens and dozens of old boxes of big bore stuff. HECK, they may still be there today. I never told anyone about that treasure trove.
I'd bring up an armload of stuff, lay it on the counter, and ask the guy how much. It was ALWAYS cheap!!! I even found a full box of the old forerunner of the 30/06. As I recall it was marked 30/03 or something weird. I bought it for a buddy in the collector club back in Victoria.
