Powder/primer supplies dwindling, what's your plan?

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. It's not hard to get stuff into the U.S.; just out. If plants start up in Canada, they could sell to the U.S. as well with no problems; in fact they could sell to the world market, of which, the American manufacturers are being asked to give up.
I have large quantities of everything that I need, and my shooter is going to be a 223, not my 30-06's (cheaper components).

A good universal rifle powder is RL15. meters well and gives outstanding accuracy in 308 and 223.

The component I worry about most is primers. I have been paying $30/M (I buy by the 5,000 case) but I hear LeBaron is even cheaper. Buy them while you can, folks.

Do you know anywhere that has RL15 in bulk? I love it, but it seems to be largely out of stock.

We were just quoted an excellent price on 20 million primers, so there are plants that have capacity. Now we have to go through the approval process with NRCAN so we can actually sell them here. Same goes for powder. Brass and bullets are a different matter. Most plants do not want to sell them as they are already booked with ammo orders.

Looking forward to this

You guys shouldn't worry about a lack of availability, what you should worry about is the price at which current supplies are available. Primers will be in stores throughout 2009, at what price is what concerns me most.

Am standardized on .22, 9mm & .308.

The .22 I stock up on when on sale with CT coupons ($10 off $40...) or buy 5,000/10,000 at a time at a discount, 9mm fairly widely available, .308 I reload and have enough components for the next 12-24 months.

My plan, get a job for the CBSA and learn all the in and outs of smuggling and go from there :p.

also whats the situation with reloading equipment, are buisnesses still able to import all the equipment for reloading like LEE/REDDING/RCBS, PRESSES, DIES etc... do canadian buisnesses still have the import permits for reloading supplies or have those been revoked by the american government?.

I know we cant just go to the states and bring back anything gun related.

You can go to the states and bring back loading equipment if you want. FS

Uh ............................................. no! ;)

Well... :) then... :) keep taking it up the bumholio for primers then :)

On a more serious note, if the prices and logistics work out I could possibly pick some up and send them to you. I don't know what canpar charges, but depending on how many you want it may be worth it.

You should move out of that terrible western part of Canada to Ontario where I can go to at least 3 places within a 30 minute drive of my house who have lots of Win & CCI primers for $28 per thou.

Please tell me the name of any retailers selling primers for $28/ 1000 and I will send them an order for 500,000 right now as our current cost is $37 +/ 1000. Even more of a concern to us is virtually no distributors have any!! primers in stock. Dianne just went Canada wide and bought up any primers we could get our hands on as we are almost out at this time. When we do the gun shows we almost sell out every where we go. Phil.

I'll second that.

My cost on CCI is $28/1000 and on Wincesters it is $31.97/1000.
That's if my distributors even have them.
They currently have none.
The last shipment they had was from Federal and that was ordered in Fall 2006 and arrived in Winter 2008.

Bearhunter. The US Govt DoD and DLA just reversed part of the decision on surplus military brass. As long as the cases are .50 cal or smaller they can be sold and reloaded. Unfortunately for some, larger caliber brass cases must be destroyed under the contract between the govt and purchaser. (info paraphrased from a letter I received from Georgia Arms, who I have purchased factory reloads from)

I don't know about primers/powder/bullets but Obama isn't allowing the US military to sell expended cases to reloaders or surplus dealers anymore. Supplies of non military cartridges, like the 300wsm or even the 30-06 may never be a problem. Military utilised cartridges are another matter altogether. Until the manufacturers can ramp up production to take up the short fall, there will definitely be a major gap in supply and demand. Guys with 50BMG rifles will now have to buy new brass rather than milsurp at 1/10 the cost. Same goes for bullets. A very expensive rifle to shoot just got a lot more expensive.
I heard that the US military is still hiring contractors to reload practise ammunition but that's about it. Absolutely no sale of brass for public consumption.
Americans are a lot quicker into the fray than we Canadians, they will find a way around this mess.
Wether it really has anything to do with internal gun control other than being an irritant, is yet to be seen. With all of the countless millions of rounds expended in the US military it's a reasonable assumption that the cases could be going to undesirables. Not that would really be an issue, considering the proliferation of US manufactured milspec ammunition throughout the world.

This is the US situation not the Canadian one. The DOD is still selling in bulk weight .223, .308 and .50 BMG brass. Last batch was 25000 pounds +- of mixed caliber brass. We never had a big quantity of US military brass to start with in Canada. But you can get Canadian Military brass and that should be our concern, right
