This might seem like a noob question, but is the 1911 .45 Commander restricted or prohibited?

From what I can tell, they come in either 4" or 4.25" barrel, full sized grip frame, 7 or 8 rd. magazine. Kimber calls this size "Pro", Springfield calls this size "Champion", others often call this size "custom", "compact", or "carry".

I'm guessing the 4" are prohib and the 4.25 are restricted, of course. Is there any rhyme or reason to the size difference with manufacturers?

Kimber, as far as I know, doesn't make a true commander 1911. Theirs are either full size or 4" and shorter.

Commander length (4.25") is restricted, not prohibited. Get one ;) they're awesome

Just bought an STI Ranger. 4.15" and not prohib. It doesn't feel any smaller than a standard 1911, so I'm not sure what the attraction is. I'm thinking it's overrated and overpriced. It looks nice, so shouldn't be hard to sell.

I'm pretty sure your barrel is at a minimum of 106mm and not the 105.41mm as indicated, or it would be prohibited from a new sale.

STI Ranger is hands down the best 1911 I've owned or fired, don't know why you'd wanna get rid of it...

Cool... I want one!

Where is the best place to find a Commander?

I'd trust anything that has been thru the hands of Gunnar.

There is an STI Ranger II and a Para CCW. Both are commander length.
Also check out the used section although I think they are all gov't length.

I'm having my 1911 tuned and refinshed by him as we speak.

Commanders are a great lenght, I find they balance better than the Government. At SHOT I held a Bul 1911 with double stack Officers frame with a Commander slide, me wanted very much!!

I had a ranger II , great gun but the bluing rubs off easily . But like someone said , not much difference between the commander and full size (3/4 inch) . If u want something compact and dont mind paying 3-4K u can get a wilson CQB compact with extended barrel or stealth (SDS) or a Nighthawk T3 , lady hawk or talon .

I'm pretty sure the Ranger II has a government frame, which is why it feels no small than a government model 1911. I think true commanders have a shorter grip. Personnaly, I find the commanders to be the most balanced model. It's why I own a Ranger II and a Wilson Combat Professional. My next 1911 however is going to be a true commander, unlike both I own now.

"True" Commanders have a shorter dustcover, yes, but the grip frame length of a "true" Commander is the same as that of the government model.

(The STI Ranger had a shorter grip frame.)

I second that anything from Armco is golden.

Yeah, just what is 'gold' going for now anyway.... :p
