I am currently considering purchasing a sako 85 stainless laminate, and I am looking for input on this rifle from people that own or have actually used the sako 85.

Just bought one in Jan of this year in 22-250 here is a 100 yard group when I was working up a load.

I kept changing the elevation setting then shot the top 4 shot group.

I'm thinking they are shooters with the right load.

Do they chamber the 300 RUM or 7mm STW...lol

No,and if they did,I wouldn't want one.I am cutting down the recoil by going with a lowly 7mmremag.

There are plenty of sako 85s in 270win available at reduced prices, but I will never own a 270 of any kind.:D

I have an 85 laminate SS in 338F, very accurate rifle it will shoot just about any bullet/powder combo I have tried into 1" or less @ 100 meters. Nice trigger, smooth action...I like it

Then why would you buy a laminate?

I posted that I would consider a Mcmillan, not that I had decided to buy one for sure.I don't like the factory synthetic stock, and I won't have a walnut stock on a hunting rifle,so the only logical choice is the laminate. If I like the laminate stock,I may decide to keep it.

sako 75 would probably be easier to get a Mcmillan for, since you dont have to send off your barreled action for a 75 like you would for an 85 for lug fitting

McMillan told me when I talked to them that there would be no problem and that the action was not needed to fit a Sako 85 action into a Sako Hunter stock. They could do it no problem with the test rifle they had there. Stock would just have to be ordered accordingly! They also told me it is a 5 month waiting list now. Check the internet specials is my recommendation!

That is strange, i have a McMillian stock on order and should be done in the next 3-4 weeks and i had to find someone in the states that was sending in the same action as mine in order for me to get one. I have ordered a second one and i have to wait until they get another rifle in (one in the same action length) from a customer before they can make it for me. Both stock are in the Sako Hunter pattern.

I have a Hunter 85 in wood and a hunter stainless grey wolf in 7mm rem mag. I have yet to fire the stainless but the other one is great. I hope to use conquest rapid z 800 scopes on each going forward.

Unfortunately,I don't see a lot of new sako 75s in 7mmremmag being advertised.

As for scope and mounts,I am looking at my personal favorite, the Swarovski 3x10x42 mounted in the new one piece ring mounts from Sako.

I know when I got my last 2 Sako Hunter stocks from McMillan which was over 3 years ago it was 3 1/2 months for 1 and 4 1/2 for the other. I think production times has a lot to do with the military. If they put a big order in I think everything else gets put on hold. Talked to a guy in the US that had his barrel action there and it took 13 months to get it back. Now that turn around time is rare, but it does happen. I know each time I ordered previously they told me 2 months on the phone and it ended up being double that. It will be interesting to see if you do get your stock in the 3-4 week window like they said. Let me know how it goes!

Nothing wrong with the 7mm mag, likely just as dead as the STW or RUM.

My favorite cartridge will always be the 7mmstw,but in my present situation.it's a matter of balancing ballistics with recoil.I even considered the 7mm-08,but I really don't want to give up that much velocity/energy for longer range shots on moose and elk.The 7mmremmag is splitting the difference. If I was having a gun built,it would likely be a 280 improved.

I wasnt talking about my time being 3-4 weeks it has taken months to get it done...I just have that left apparently. I was talking about the fact you mentioned that McMillian had actions there to build stocks for the 85...which they dont or maybe have a couple, just not mine.

I'd be all over the custom 280 AI on a 700 route if it was me.
