I'd put the old grips back on if it were mine.
all the script is easyly read. did not damage it at all
If the front strap has been modified it ruins most of the value for a collector.

Just to build on that, once it has been refinished it is no longer a 'collector' piece. Best described, when refinished, a USGI pistol is still a representation piece of the period, but somewhere between a collector and a shooter. That's how I see it anyway.
+1 on that, too.
I'd much rather see a USGI 1911A1 restoed back to 'correct' configuration, albeit non-original, than look at it as an abomination that some one had 'done up' for target shooting, etc.
