On that note.

This poor soul went for over 680.00 plus tax at Maynards on the weekend.Fun project to depimpify and return to Band of Brothers glory.

That nickeled auction piece was a 1943 Colt USGI frame with a commercial slide on it. Even if the nickel was removed the two major components aren't correct to eachother.

Yeah, someone paid way too much for that beast!

One of the Maynards guys called me on this item...I agree with NAA (not that I know diddly in comparison). I was the only gun guy he knew. Poor old girl...

I think some nice wood grips would look sweet on her.

I agree the Norc wraparounds, although quite 'functional' don't do anything to capture the nostalgia of it's looks. Some double diamond hardwood stocks would really dress it up.

Even better yet, some plain checkered hardwood stocks would make it look like a very early USGI 1911A1. ;)

Ditch those Norinco abominations.

Just put your old grips back on it. They'll look better, and they'll look correct too.

Yep, truly a mixmaster with a commercial slide. But it would still be nice redone.

Nor do they allow the prospective purchaser to see that this pistol has a stippled front strap.

And on a side note, how come the parkerizing on the front quarter of the pistol is darker than the rest?

that is due to the heat treated front that used to be common. the color of the parking always will depend on the carbon in the steel. higher carbon, darker parkerizing. if you look closely at the other one someone restored it is the same.

Had to do with the prep on the steel in that area. On most USGI pistols you will see this on the front of the slide and sometimes around the slide stop notch. It is usually quite subtle in original finish guns but for some reason becomes quite pronounced when they are refinished.

You can see it on this original finish 1945 mfg Colt USGI 1911A1:
