I'm seriously considering buying one of these things.

I was looking at the 700P LTR, 700 XCR Compact Tactical and the 700 VTR but for $1300+ I'm thinking the $750 SPS is a bargain.

I dunno what I would put on it for a scope but I'm assuming $5-600 could do the job nicely.... maybe a falcon menace.

Thoughts?

eta* like the compact 20" bbl and I'm thinking I'll be using it for hunting and probably <500yrd plinking

it was more of a bargain 2 years ago when they were selling the SPS HB varmints for $499-$550. A buddy has one and the HB model shoots really good. The stock is kinda....meh, but the rest is what you pay for. I loved shooting it.

I have a SPS tac and boy does it shoot. I did how ever tune the trigger and just today, bought a LTR HS presision stock because the houge is a little flimsy.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. It just depends how much you want to spend.

good luck

well you will end up with a 20" barrel on the sps tac.if you want a longer barrel look at the sps varmit.the money you save on one of these put it in to a stock that will like better.i went with a B&C medilest A2 for around $300(alot of digging).the @0"tube should do what im need out of the rifle(600M or less).also have a triger job in the futur
($50 or so)

I'm goin to the Kamloops show this weekend and it would be nice to come back with a boom stick. If you guys can recommend a better deal than the SPS, I'm all ears. I would like to keep the total package under $2000 if possible (I know, scope should be more than the gun but I can always upgrade later).

Savage 10FP HS precision (around 1K) or McMillan stock (around 1300) plus decent optics will put you around 2K +- as well as 100-150 for a bipod..

Do the research on the 5R. After that look up what they retail for, when you can find them.

Get back to us on that "better deal" question after doing the reading.

$2175 or so but............

I know it's a little more than you wanted, but 10 round mag...... That's great!!

P&D has them right now, I was under the impression they were law enforcement only, but I was wrong!!

im kind of in the same boat as you with the $2000 limit.pick up a sps tactical(if you like the 20").look at a falocn scope(to start out with).get your self a good mount system.i have a g-force farrel with tps rings.then as the $ comes start up gradeing.the EE is a great place to free up $ (as long as your not trying to add 10% over retal:p).the sps i have gave me a 5/8 MOA.with my first hand load i tried.i did have to put a little shim inbetween the recoiul lug and front action screw to floot the barrel...
but if you can swing the 5R your going to be ahead of the game IMAO.

Well there was going to be a SPS Tac at the Kamloops show with a HS stock, Nightforce rail ect....but I snagged it first :)

I love it, havent shot it yet, but Im sure it will be a shooter :)

Will get a range report once it quits snowing....thats right, snowing quite a bit today lol

My wife has an SPS Tac in .223. She bought a used Tasco 6-18x to mount on it.

62gr American Eagle pedestrian blend made a two-hole, 5 shot group, 19mm center to center, the first time out. I was impressed.

Well I just read this:

I dunno that the 5R is really ringin my bell.... Epoxy7, perhaps you would like to make a pitch?

I'm thinkin' that if I don't find something that really get me at the show I'll proabably buy an XCR Compact Tactical.

I consider them to be a fantastic value for what they are. Satin ie bead blasted low glare stainless action and barrel. 5R rifling with a 1:11.25 twist rate which shoots 168 and 175 grain ammo perfectly. 24" barrel so you get the velocity while still being fairly handy. Add in the HS stock with the aluminum bedding block. For $1145 that's really hard to beat. Also these rifles are well known for shooting off the shelf .308 match grade ammo at .5 moa and less in many cases. These things sell themselves.

I bought a HS take off stock from a VSSF (Tan version of the stock that was on the 5R). Cost $330. The cost second hand for a 5R takeoff stock is often closer to $400. I believe they are $500 new.

The idea was to put this stock on a SPS tactical. That was until I did the math. $750 (best price I could find), plus taxes, now add in the $330 for the stock. Almost the exact same price. Only with a blued finished receiver/barrel, and regular rifling. Instead I decided to put the tan stock on my second 5R rifle (haven't shot it yet).

Here's the main reason I recommend this rifle:

Federal Gold medal 168 grain Matchkings : FPS: 2650 (From manufacturers website, so probably 26" barrel)
Results: 5R milspec rifle 5 round groups at 100 yards. Scope Zeiss Conquest @20x

1) 5 rounds light wind, +15 celsius. .657 edge to edge. .657-.308= .349" or .349 MOA (Stock trigger)
2) 5 rounds 5-10 Km/h winds +8 celcius. .673 edge to edge. .673-.308= .365" or .365 MOA (Trigger pull lowered to 2.5 lbs)

OK, that was a good pitch. I'll keep my eyes open at the show. Does Remington still make them? MSRP?

I've got to admit, I'm still likin' the XCR compact tactical.

Remington does still make them, but they aren't a catalog item. Special runs only. We've been lucky in Canada due to fairly good availability. They seem to run about $1400 from a retailer.

I like the XCR compact tactical as well. I considered one in .223. The price tag was pretty steep though at $1600. Also I've never handled one of the BC stocks, so I don't know how they compare to the HS. I understand they are comparable but having never tried/held one I can't say for sure.
