Ok I use 3 types of primers now
Large Rifle, for all my rifles
Magnaum Large Rifle for my magnums and 450/577
Small Pistol all my pistol ammo including .357mag

now the questions,

Should I be using a Small Pistol Magnum primer in my .357mag reloads.

I'll be loading some .223, those require small primers, whats the difference between Small Pistol and Small Rifle and is there really a difference

I guess I'll need to start stocking Small Rifle primers and another powder soon. :(
 
I think the small rifle have a hotter flame and maybe a thicker cup.I use magnum primers in my 357 with 296 or 2400 loads and regular primers for lighter unique loads.

Bingo thats it...I was just reading that if you use 357 mag in a rifle and use IMR4227 some loads have small rifle primer listed, to get the 4227 going.
 
yes I ended up using 4227 in my 450-577 and the regular LR primers were not buring reliable so switched to magnum primers.

So far its as I thought, slightly hotter, I'll have to buy a brick or 2 of small rifle for my 223 reloading.

I don't know why you would. The standard primers work fine and are the traditional load.

Don't use pistol primers in your 223. The pistol primers have softer cups and are not designed for that much pressure. The 357 magnum almost stretches the limit with them on pressure and they noticeably flatten and crater more, than would a small rifle primer with the same pressure.
 
Used to run small rifle primers in my .38 super - picked up velocity about equal to half a grain of powder over small pistol primers.

small primers

I have used small rifle primers in my 357 but would;nt dare use small pistol in a 223 . think about it . from what I have read you should;nt use large rifle primers in a large pistol as from what buddy said they sit higher in the pocket than large pistol . and so the article said small pistol and small rifle are the same size just not the same strength. :runaway:

well I've got another box of primers :eek: price went up :eek: a lot :( I stocked up on all the other sizes before the price went up so that was a bit of a shock.

so 4 types of primers and 8 different powders so far in my loading room :D

I'm not very good at knitting :p
 
Large rifle primers are just a little longer than large pistol primers use your caliper and you will see this, same with small pistol and small rifle primers. caution, my experince only ymmv, in my revolvers the large rifleprimers work well with a slightly reduced load, I have yet to try them in my .45 auto. I primed about 20 cases to try this but hav;nt loaded them yet. The primer seems to protrude, a bit and I think it will slamfire??? Will let you know when I try them.
