Is it me or does it seem like some of the Firearm companies are deferring cost to the consumers by not making their hunting rifles with Iron sights anymore?

FFS Some of this glass work costs as much as the rifle it is on, not to mention all the nonsense surrounding rings.

I just want to see a company put out a good set of iron sighted rifles again...even better some aperture sights.

Pardon the rant, but I'm having sticker shock over the price of "optional" iron sights for one of my rifles... "Front & Rear sights are $275.00 + taxes for the set". :eek:

I hear you. It seems the only ones coming with Irons are the big game cartridges, even then they aren't very good.

For example, I was looking at a ruger no.1 in .375 and the rear sight was the exact same as the rear on my savage .22LR bolt action.
 
I hear you loud & clear - I too like to use iron sights and I have the same beef. My solution has been to buy and use rifles from an earlier time....Browning Safaris, J.C. Higgins (FN) mausers, SAKO L61Rs and the like. Not only are they more finely crafted rifles (and usually purchased for less money than the new stuff), but they already have the sights I prefer. There's nothing sweeter than an FN action with a Lyman 48 or 57 receiver sight or an L61R with a factory aperture sight. And yes, 'scope guys', it is perfectly normal to shoot MOA groups with iron sights - I do it all the time, with tri-focal glasses over 60 year old eyeballs to boot.:p

I think most consumers would rather you pay $275 for your iron sight option if you want them, than for everyone to pay for them and take them off...

I must have removed many hundreds of iron sights over the years... I don't know anyone who uses them on a flat shooting rifle. (other than specific target work).
 
Both my BLR and Finwolf have good iron sights. I've pulled the scope off my BLR and like shooting it better with iron. The rifle fits me better in that config.
Haven't tried the finwolf, but I'm going to...when I find the rear sight...grrrrrrr.
I think I'll invest in a good spotting scope instead.
 
I know what you mean.

I was up Island last year and went shooting with a buddy and we banged off a pile of 45/70 loads out of his Ruger # 1 witha reciever sight. That was fun.

Last week I went shooting with a 1956 Model 94 30-30 with Williams receiver sights I put on and really surprised myself on the 100 yard target.

I'm just waiting for the proper set of high front sights to arrive for my Marlin 30-30 before sighting that in with vintage Refield receiver sights aboard.
 
I can sympathize with having to pay extra for something you feel should be standard, but the fact is, most of us have scopes on our rifles. Since probably over 80% of rifles get scoped, it just makes sense that firearms manufacturers are cuting costs and making them optional.

You could always invest that $275 into a milsurp that comes with sights and hunt with that...
 
If I want iron sights on a rifle, I'll pick out the style I want and install them. Most irons from the factory are just junk.

The iron sights on the .375 Ruger Alaskan are very good, the sights on the Mdl 94 trapper I just bought kinda suck, and are going to be replaced with some good ones.:)
 
Although I have never hunted with iron sights, as my experience increase, i am beginning to think they are a good idea since I rarely see anything beyond 150 yards.
 
Factory irons are usually garbage anyway, so even then I find I still have to pay extra for a decent of irons. And from the factory they break up the lines of a rifle, ruining its aesthetic when a scope is mounted (as it is 90+% of the time).

I'm quite pleased with the status quo. Leave all sights off the rifle, and allow the end user decide what to install.
 
William's Gun Sights sells high quality iron sights for most commercial hunting rifles. Far less than $200 too. Add the W's. .williamsgunsight.com/gunsights/gunsightsdefault.htm

On my "all around" rifle I will be putting some iron sights. I'd use them as backup or in case I'm hunting in the thick stuff.

It's a Ruger and there is a company that makes a rear peep that monuts on the Ruger ring mount slot. All I need then is a front sight and a quarter to remove the scope.
 
I just bought 3 sets of Williams "foolproof" sights for my 3 Marlin levers...ordered 'em direct from Williams. No prob getting them here in Canada either.

This usually means a trip to a gun$mith to install iron sights. :rolleyes:
Nice some of you are made of money but I'm not, so I would just like to see a few more options out there.

I mean what ever happened to buying a complete rifle? Buy ammo and go?

Now a days one spends almost a grand on a rifle then they get walked over to get a second raping at the scope counter. :rolleyes:

Ah hell I was so miffed I ran down to the gunsafe and slapped a $45 Tasco red dot on my Benelli R1. Booyah! :p

I'll have to try this Fuzzy Dice in a Ferrari set-up at the range this weekend. :D
