I bought a used CMMG .22 Conversion kit for my Norc M4 with thousands of rounds through it. The extractor claw is slightly worn, and the front assembly (the part with the .223 casing ) wobbles a bit when not in the gun. I was shooting it through a Norinco CQ5.56 (M4 Carbine version).

Ammo was 38 gn copper plated HP Federal Game Shock High Velocity, and Remington 40gn copper plated Remington Gold Bullet. Federals shot poorly (many FTE's and FTF's) but Gold Bullets were worse- with frequent and regular FTF's, double feeds, and FTE's.

I suspect it may have been a mag issue - the mag was a 10 rounder that had been creatively converted to a 27 rounder (drywall knife, needle-nose pliers, butane lighter, and sand paper) - but even loaded to 5, it still had problems with both ammo types.

Can't speak much to my groupings, since I spent a lot of time clearing stoppages, double feeds, and FTF's.

Overall - it was a pretty frustrating experience.

One other note, the assembly was quite filthy - I did a half-assed cleaning with nitrosolve and CLP, but the feedramp was quite grimy, and I can't speak to the condition of the barrel (it seemed quite filthy). I admit, it was a bit more lubed than it needed to be. The AR itself was a bit more slimy than it should have been.

Came home and did a complete cleanup of the gun and kit. Scrubbed out the carbon buildup with Hoppes and did a light application of CLP.

Fellow I bought the kit from demo'd it using Federal Champion 36 gn Copper HP's - the kind in the 525 value packs from Canadian Tire. Results of the demo were favourable enough to warrant me buying it (about 50 rounds through, no malfuctions or stoppages)

I think my next range trip will be with that ammo.

Anyone else have any thoughts/experience that might help?

I bought a new kit off of questar and an extra four Black Dog magazines to go with it. So far I have had excellent results using both Federal and Winchester Dynapoint high velocity. I have fired about 800 rounds so far and have had about three stovepipe stoppages so far. I have not really gotten down to serious accuracy testing with it. My timings have been somewhat compressed. I will try to post something once I have some more meaningful feedback.

Is that the one that was in EE recently for $500.00? If so, I looked at it, but when compared to a new CMMG w/ mag from Questar for $335.00 the choice was clear. I don't mean to seem like an ass. I was just surprised to see that item for $500.00.

The 22LR AR15 conversion kits have to be very clean and very well oiled to work properly. Also, as you noted, different ammo will produce different results for reliability. Give it a really good clean and soaking with oil, then try it again with a couple different types of ammo. If it's still trash, contact the seller and see about a refund.

Didn't get it off the EE.

Rem Golden bullets suck out the Ceiner/Attkinson/CMMG kits... don't know why, since it is a 40gr bullet, but they just don't function very well. I have a AA for my G22 and G20, Ceiner AR15, and SIG P220 .22LR kits, and compared to other rounds, the Golden bullets jam the most in all four kits . I use CCI for my .22LR conversion kits as they seem to have enough recoil impulse and shoot a LOT cleaner.

I have one of the TacSol AR-22 uppers on my Norinco CQ311 lower, black dog magazine feed well even when stuffed with the full 27 rounds. Winchester '333' seem to crap out every 7-10 rounds, while virtually everything else I tried (including 525 value packs) fed perfect, even after I shot about 1200 rounds in the same day with no cleaning.

On the first one, they all do that. The front piece is removable.

On the second:
- if you saw a successful demo with a certain brand of ammo, try that. All of the .22 kits are ammo-sensitive.
- try a better mag - the Black Dog Machine mags from Questar work well.

Anyone try CCI Blazzer or American Eagle out of these conversion kits yet?

In the last week, I ran 1200 rounds of AE High Velocity 38gr round nose copper plated in an AR with the CMMG kit. Runs clean and minimal failures.

There were less than 5% FTF and whenever it does happen, you get to practice your failure drills. :D

Ammo comes in 400 round bricks of 10 x40 rounds.

Others that I tested in .22LR kits (AA, Sig, CMMG) that works: Win Super-X Super-Speed RN (<5% failures) and CCI Stinger (<5%).

Others that had high failure rates: Win Super-X High Velocity (10%) and Rem Golden Bullets (>25%).

Now if I can only get my hands on a couple cases of CCI MiniMags... :ar15:

Good to know Rem Golden Bullets are crap - I saw about the same rate for failures with them that you posted Edward.

Rem's Golden Bullets were actually >25% failure but gave up tracking it because it was getting frustrated. Purchased and tested one brick (500 rounds) and it was my last.

Note: all of the above were done on 500 round bricks to ensure consistency and a standard population to recording the percentage of failures.

I plan on also getting the cmmg .22lr conversion for my norinco M4.

my question is the rifle is new never fired, should I break it in with .223 first then go to the conversion kit or does it matter?

try new mags (BDMs), also there is a website out there that shows you how to get clean and polish the kit to reduce some of the friction. There is a suggestion to replace the spring with a wolflake spring. Which I did with mine. took a dremel to polish the friction area, replace the spring. and blam, shoots everything from the 525 value packs, to remy subsonics.

.22 conversion in your AR require high velocity rounds to cycle properly with minimal issues. My conversion does not work well with anything with a velocity lower then 1400 FPS. CCI works best for me, other opinions may vary

Do the conversion kits adversely affect accuracy from .223?

Any pics of targets when using the conversion kits? Thanks in advance.
