5" 1911 or Commander?

I got the Government model. I think the only advantage the Commander has is that it would be easier to draw/carry. Since we can't do that here I figure it comes down to bigger=badder, after all it is a gun.

That said, I was far too excited to get mine (it was my first one) to really care about much other than it felt good in my hand and the price was right.

Always go with what you find the most comfortable, the Commander size would be my first choice for a defensive sidearm; but the extra lenght of the full sized is good for a tad extra velocity and sighting. Since I only shoot targets with mine , I went full sized.

mmattockx..... If you are going to send it to Gunnar anyway...... Why not just get the new 1911A1 from Gunnar...... it would be cheaper and he has a full 1year warrenty on his as well?

I mean the one from canam is $350 + tax and shipping, then shipping to gunnar, then $100 +tax (for the tune up) and shipping again...... and then no warrenty from Canam.... as the pistol has been worked over?

OR

$449.00 +tax and shipping from Armco & a full 1 year no hassel feed anything warrenty? Then you get a 1911 that is tuned, will feed any ammo & has a 3.5 to 4lb crisp trigger.....

Kind of a no-brainer for me anyway...... I ordered from Gunnar.....

Unless the one at armco is not what you want.... in that case ignore everything I just typed...... :D

Cheers!

Agreed 110%!
I can hardly wait for him to get more,.... I like my Colt Gov't model so much I have to have another one, just because....:dancingbanana:

That would be the problem. I want the all blue police model and Gunnar doesn't have any of those. Believe me, I asked. He only has the A1 model and doesn't plan on getting any of the others in. I would even wait if he was planning on getting the police model in, but it will not be happening.

I guess I am ignorant of the differance between the Police model, Goverment model, 1911A1.... etc. etc.

The damn pics online are so small and grainy..... I really didn't think there was much of a differnance...... If someone would like to "school" me feel free! I am a sponge.....

To me a Colt is a Colt, a STI is a STI, a Norinco is a Norinco........ well not really I can tell the differance from a Colt gold Cup and a 70 series...... I guess I just need to "experiance" more 1911's :D

I guess my next mission in life will be to "try them all"!!!!!! I think that will have to be my 2010 new years resolution!!!!!

Good luck on your purchase mmatt

5" full size 1911 is the way to go, you will be much happier at the range, just like other posts saying, the commanders is better for draw/carrying.

The A1 (or government model) is just like the old military issue 1911, with standard length slide stop, standard safety (short and not ambidextrous), standard grip safety (no beavertail or speed bump) and a spur hammer.

The Police model has the extended slide stop and ambidextrous/extended safety and a beavertail grip safety with speed bump. It also has a commander style hammer and serrations near the front of the slide.

Keep in mind that these are the Norcs I am talking about, I am sure there are more variations you may have seen from other companies.
