Saw a cougar today...

Even if you dumped a dead cougar on the door step of your local MNR office they would insist there is no way to prove it was shot here or that it wasn't shot at a animal sanctuary.

I went through a similar episode with them a few years ago (not cougar related) and came to the conclusion that denying and lying seems to be what they do best.

Where do you guys come up with this stuff?? Just call the MNR office, 1-519-773-9241, they will tell you they exist, they will tell you they are here. What is up with insisting they are trying to deny it? I talk to them frequently about the cougar, it is an open topic and certainly not one that requires a tin foil hat to comprehend. There was a time when there was simply no proof, now that there is (stool sample) they have no issues what-so-ever with saying "YES! THERE IS TRUTH BEHIND ALL THIS".
Just call them and discuss it (you know, the old fashioned way before internet rumors came about) and you may be surprised with what you hear, there is no denial.
I speak with the head biologist, before his desk job (another poke in this thread) he was the head deputy and only worked in the field, good people with a really crappy job in my opinion.
Seems some of you guys thrive on controversy, even though the MNR has openly admitted the existence of this species there are still those who insist on screaming their opinion from under a table in the corner of the room.
Last time, there is no denial...

They denied it for years or wrote off sightings to errors or escaped pets. Only recently have they determined to gather solid facts, after scat was analyzed. Nonetheless they continue to suggest the cougars are escaped pets.

It's their usual routine. Five years ago a local MNR flunkie dismissed my report of a black bear roaming on our property. She said it wasn't possible this far south and asked whether there was a animal preserve or sanctuary near my home that a bear could have escaped from (there isn't.)

A week or so later animal control shot the bear outside Hamilton. In the years since then others have been spotted in the area and one was shot near a Wellington County school last year.

But the MNR will tell you all of this has absolutely nothing to do with cancelling the spring bear hunt.

I hope those cougars kill and eat coyotes, and not just our precious deer.

Will they eventually displace the coyote?

id rather have coyotes then cougars,I bow hunt alot and I doubt the laws will change permitting us to carry something for cougar protection in deer season

I used to live northwest Saskatchewan. We had a small acreage at the top of a river bank. On the other side of the highway that went by our place there was a big gravel pile. Every now and then we would see a cougar up on top of that gravel pile looking around for deer we suspected. We also had a few Lynx that lived around there too.

Buddy of mine lives in Ilderton(just north of London)his house backs on to a farm field. He saw one walking across the field and called the MNR to report it but he said that he could tell that they didn't take his story seriously.I've also heard rumors that it was the MNR that secretly reintroduced them in southern Ontario to control the deer population instead of changing the rediculous regulations that we are stuck with.Might explain all the denial.
