***Warning!!!! Long winded post to follow but please read.****
I was at Mission Rod and Gun today shooting my Norc M-14 after letting everyone know I was planning on shooting semi-auto and intending on using a loaded magazine and was going to shoot at the far right of the line out of consideration of others (no RSO present).
While I was shooting an RSO showed up and I was informed I could only load my magazine one round at a time. After a philosophical discussion we agreed I could continue to shoot with a loaded magazine as long as I continued to do it in an appropriate manner (no rapid fire, all rounds hitting the target stand, etc).
While shooting I ran into Iain Gough-Townsend (the club president) who expressed a willingness to loosen up the rules but suggested an organized group would be better as it would allow a more coherent and standardized approach including our own RSOs. He even said such an organization would have access to club funding.
I figure it is time to s##t or get off the pot. I am trying to organize a Service Rifle Club at the Mission Gun Club and even have a few of our (future) members qualified as the RSO. I can see a lot of potential in terms of a training facility to shoot longer distance (300 yards) and even have access to some club funding. Who knows, perhaps even organize training events/clinics etc. Let's create a home for those of us who like and shoot semi-auto rifles.
I am trying to make this a positive thread in order to improve conditions at Mission and encourage new members. Please don't let this thread degenerate into past experiences or finger pointing.
I am trying to gauge interest by touching base with those CGNers who are Mission members and those in the Lower Mainland who would be interested in becoming members should this become reality.

UPDATE 09-08-31
My apologies on the delay. It is entirely my fault. Iain has been very supportive throughout this process. Anytime I send him an e-mail the reply is within hours. Between the two kids at home (5 month and 2 1/2 years, other commitments, and lots of OT at work I finally made it out to Mission last week for the first time since June. I am currently preparing to make a presentation to the MDRG Exectutive on Sept 29 to gain approval for service rifle.
So far my presentation will cover that Service Match Conditions is a nation wide recognized shooting event with participants from the Canadian Forces (Regular and Reserve, Police, Foreign Military, and civilians). These matches take place across Canada.
MDRG would be an excellent place to practice most of the stages. These practices could be set up throughout the year and generate new members and more income (through regular memberships and guest fees) for the club throughout the year.
Most competitors use the AR-15 to compete, which is a restricted rifle. Due to requirements put out by the CFO in BC. We are required to have an active gun club membership to purchase restricted firearms and apply for permits to transport.
Service rifle is a disciplined shooting sport and is not spray and pray. Will not cause damage to club property. (I hope this will appeal to those who hate semi-autos).
Service Rifle will be a self-contained discipline and will strive to have their own RSO's.
Service Rifle is not limited to semi-automatic rifles. The Canadian Rangers compete with Lee Enfields and this discipline would not discriminate against anyone wishing to learn.
Seperate events could be held to widen interest such as vintage military service rifle matches.
So far that is the list I could come up with. If anyone has any other suggestions please send me a PM. I will be away on a course in Ottawa from Sept 14-25 so I may be a little slow responding to PMs at that time.
Update 09-09-29
We just got back from the executive meeting. The proposal went over well. There were a number of concerns brought up but I think we were able to address them. One of the concerns that come up was the schedule is booked solid for special events on weekends. If service conditions becomes a discipline as the "new kid on the block" we might end up getting the leftovers in terms of weekends for organizing training days and may have to resort to organizing events on weekdays as well. I hope to hear back soon as to what the next step is and how well the proposal was received.
If anyone is interested in taking part or helping out please send me a PM.

I just heard my proposal was well received by the executive. They plan on re-visiting this single shot rule shortly and I anticipate hearing back soon.
09-11-27
I have just received word at last Tuesday's Executive Meeting a proposal was passed to completely rewrite the range rules to reflect the changes suggested to ease the restrictions on magazine fed firearms.
Whatever that means I think it's good. I haven't heard anything else but it will be brought up at the AGM on Dec 7 which I will be attending. Hopefully I will have good news to post afterwards.

Things are plodding along. We have been asked to set up an RSO course specific to Service Rifle. Hopefully everything is up and running in time for 2011...
After 18 months of seeing the executive plod along and delay my attempts to introduce a service rifle discipline I have given up. I've been beaten by the Fudds. I am letting my membership expire at the end of the year. I recently picked up an affiliate membership at the Abbotsford Fish and Game Club which will be upgraded to a full membership at the end of December. They are a more open-minded club and after licking my wounds will try to be more involved with my new club.
For those that have followed this thread for so long I wish to apologize for my lack of success. If anyone else wants to take this on you are more than welcome. I am tired of banging my head against a wall!
