Why 45/70 ?????

Hmm, well 100 years old for cartridges anyways gets you:

.45-70 Government: 1873
.22 Long Rifle: 1887
.303 British: 1888
8x50Rmm Mannlicher: 1888
7.5x55mm Swiss: 1889
7.62x54Rmm Russian: 1891
7x57mm Mauser: 1892
.30-40 Krag: 1892
6.55mm Swedish Mauser: 1894
.30-30 WCF: 1895
.32 Win Special: 1902
8x57mm Mauser: 1905
6.5x50mm Arisaka: 1905
.30-06 Springfield: 1906
.35 Remington: 1906
.470 Nitro Express: 1907
.404 Jeffery: 1909

Not much you couldn't kill with one of those. I think only the extreme long range hunting guys would really care, and I imagine they'd learn to make do with 30-06.

And in 3 years we can include the .375 H&H in th e100 year old cartridges, too;)

Sure, we can get it done using only 100 year old cartridges, but it's not as interesting as playing around with new ones, too.:dancingbanana:

I think the Guidegun/45/70 combo is ideal for the kind of hunting most people do which is at fairly short range through brush. It is simple ,handy (especially compared to a scoped rifle),has "stopping power and most importantly looks cool. If I was going to take shots past 120 meters I would choose something else but for hitting gongs or large game animals at short range it is ideal.

I do have to admit I like both the rifle and cartridge for it's nostalgia value. I do want to be a cowboy. There is something warm and attractive about the old guns ,knives and gear. They also tend to work exceptionally well or they would not have lasted so long.
In another 100 years it will be interesting to see what cartridges are still around.

It would also make a decent farm or truck gun.

Well said Unsub.

Because a 535 grain postell (yes, black powder) puts a bear "in park" right promptly... Bowhunting is not my cup of tea as I have seen game suffer and travel far too great a distance to bleed out often out of reach of the bowman.. Just in jest..(sort of) There ya go.. end suffering... hmmmm..

Well...The 45/70 with 535 grain bullets has more in common with bowhunting than you might think.

Dedicated bowhunters have some decisions to make as to how far he is willing to shoot. Modern equipment easily allows enough accuracy to make the hit at 100 yards however individual abilities and time of flight pretty much dictate 40-50 yard max shots at relaxed game. For most archers this range is much shorter.
I have let plenty of game"walk" while bowhunting, have never lost an animal, and have never had an animal go more than 60 yards from point of impact....The animals did not appear to suffer (my best elk never even stopped feeding until it tipped over dead).

The question is will you let a moose walk at 225 yards with your 45/70/535grains or will you elevate the sights to "about there" and shoot????
