Has anyone had the barrel on their HK MR223 shortened to 10.5" or 14.5"? If so, who did it and for how much? Was this process successful and did it affect accuracy? How will shortening the barrel affect the operation (gas system, piston, etc) of the firearm? I am planning to purchase a MR223 and want to have the barrel reduced to 10.5" and threaded for 1/2x28 tpi to accept standard A2 fash hiders as metric 15x1 flash hiders are near impossible to find. I also want it resemble the HK416 with more likeness. Please let me know of your experiences in this regard.

Apparently a lot of gunsmiths will not shorten an already sub 18 inch barrel due to legal concerns.

But someone here can probably hook you up with someone who will.

supposedly according to recent legal "interpretations" (note: not law changes, but interpretations by the RCMP) you cannot shorten ANY barrel under 18 inches, restricted or not.

you can CHANGE the barrel length by having a new "factory made" barrel installed.

I got a letter from the CFC that stated this exactly, I was asking about an AR45 (AKA, an AR15 chambered in .45ACP), it is most definitely a NO GO. Decided not to get it anyways though.

I essentially asked, if I could have the barrel cut down by a certified gunsmith, or if it could be cut by a gun shop BEFORE I took possession of the firearm.

Sir

Thank you for your inquiry. The barrel length will need to match the national database of standard barrels for your firearm. It is not possible to alter (cut) a manufactured barrel to a length less than 457mm, or you would be creating a prohibited firearm once assembled (whether you are an individual or a gunsmith or other business). Having said this, it is completely legal to purchase a barrel from a manufacturer and install it on your firearm. If the barrel length purchased is not in the national database, a bill of sale from a recognized manufacturer will usually suffice to make an entry in the db and allow a certificate to be created for your firearm.

Should you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Email the CFC and ask them about it, since this email only technically pertains to me (since I sent it)

However it looks that cutting ANY barrel below 18 inches is a no-go. It needs to be "made from the factory" that way.

However, what you do on your own time is your business ;)

dont ask, dont tell, and all that stuff... No way to really tell, as long as you know there is a barrel of THAT exact length.

i have already explained this point in other threads, according to the rcmp its not a grey area its cut and dry cant cut below 457mm or its a prohib

The Gas Block on the Hk416 is different for the 10.4 or the 14.5 barrels.
The gas port will be different as well.

Your going to junk the gun if you try to chop it.

Exactly, you start screwing around with the barrel length on gas-operated guns you run into the inevatible problem of port pressure. Everything is timed precisely, don't mess with it unless you did the math.

you must be all ####ed up!!! You would even think about cutting down a 5000 plus rifle sit down and think long and hard about that. These guys are the finest makers of firearms in the world and to cut it down ????????
You must be part of the Illuminati to want to. Crazy!!!!!

Something else to think about. When factory barrels are turned on a lathe they are held by the chuck at one end and a center at the other.Sometimes there is a slight bend in the barrel but as long as they are cut center to center it doesn't matter. The rifle will shoot straight. However if you trim a barrel down you can eliminate that centering and next thing you know you have a rifle that shoots way off to one side and you sights may not have enough windage to correct it.

re

I may just buy a 14.5" M4 barrel and have it installed on the MR223. I have been told by Dlask and another local guy that this will work. They both advised not to chop the factory barrel but said that this could be done succesfully as well.

as far as I know, the barrels are similar to the HK416 barrels, but I dont know if the barrel extension are the same.

You would need to have a blank barrel (with no gas port) then drill the port accordingly.

One thing though, if it can work, the barrel isn't going to last even a 3rd as long as the HK barrels do.

Now you have the difficult job of trying to find a sub 16inch barrel in Canada, it's a hot item as your not the first guy to want a shorty AR15. And it's not like the U.S. is shipping us a ton of sub 16in barrels over the border.

HK 416 barrels are rated to 20,000 plus rounds. If I get 1/3 of this out of my M4 barrel on the MR223...........I am happy!
