Looking to build a new deer, antelope rifle!!

Has anyone had any experiance with this caliber?? I know all about barrel life, over bored, etc, etc. I would like to know what if any experiences you have had with the loading and velocity and effectiveness of this cartridge!!!

How about the .264 Win mag, 6.5 STW, 6.5 -300 Weatherby!!! Maybe a few others I don't know about!!

Thanks

Paul

I would be more inclined to go with the .264WM, just cuz...On a short action I would look at a 6.5WSM...

6.5

I have loaded for a 264 win mag. had a 26" King barrel. I could only get just over 3000 fps with 140gr bullets.
If I was going to build one I would do the 6.5-300wby. it would be fast and you can get good brass for it. also 300 wby brass is easy to find and it has a nice long neck where as the 300 win mag does not. Brass is getting hard to find for the STW so I wouldn't go with that.

In the sixties and later the 6.5x300 weatherby built up quite a reputation as a 1000 yd. target cartridge, times change and folks like smaller carts. for that work now. As someone else mentioned, .300 Weatherby brass is good to work with.

I love the 264 also. My experience has found the same that Bigbear said. 140's at about 3070FPS was the sweet spot in mine. With the 6.5mm BC that's lots enough. Powder is key in a 264 from what I've found. RL25 worked good for me. H870 is killer but they don't make it anymore. Have yet to try US869. It should work great too!

The 6.5x300 Weatherby is an excellent long range killer, up close it is very messy on just about all game that you may want to eat. I tried one on mule deer, I shot it in the head and the backstraps were bloodshot. I stopped using it and tried the 7mm STW, same effect on game. I found the .270 to be effective enough and left the meat wasting velocity demons to someone else.

I have achieved 3300 fps with the 264 Win Mag/140 Partition in a 27" Pac-Nor tube using H5010 or Retumbo powders. Accuracy was superb and it was quite the laser on game at long range. Eagleye.

Interesting concept but aside for open arctic tundra and the prairie provinces... How many people on this board are actually capable of seeing game let alone hunt out to 1000 yds?

Nobody said anything about long range hunting. Just Looking to build something different!!

And also as you stated, we here on the priarie provinces can (if we wish) hunt or shoot at 1000+:D

But that is when I bring out the TRG 42 in .338 Lapua:cool:

6.5-???

If you are working off an action with the mag bolt face then I would go with the 264mag, but if the action hasn't been determined I would go with the 6.5-284 it's far more accurate than the using the Mag cases. (less recoil and good resale value).
Enjoy your project.

I have a Remington 700 in 7x57 that chronographs 140 Nosler Partitions at 2840 fps, it works just fine and I don't need 80 grains of powder to do it.

I was very satisfied with a 26" Mod. 70 264 Win Mag ... using 120 gr. Barnes and H870
(still have 3 unopened pounds of it ) ... Retumbo & RL 25 also gave good results, and although I never got around to trying, so should US869. The 6.5-06 is not that far behind with 120's and 130's.

I think I'd be just as happy with a Rem 700 based ( XCR, CDL or Sendero SFII-based )
7mm Rem. Ultra Mag with 120's or 140's - more velocity still out of the same bulllet weights... but if it's a 6.5 you rewally want ... go for it. Why stop at the 6.5 STW,
maybe a 6.5 Ultra Mag ???

why not just go with the 7mm RUM? Shoots a TSX flatter than a 22/250 shooting a 55 gr, lots of brass, and factory chamberings if you are inclined to go that way. You could go to a 6.5 RUM or a 6.5/300 weatherby, but I can't see the advantage,

.270 Weatherby would be another way to go...
