I recently bought an M96 Swede Mauser sporter in 6.5x55 and really like the performance. It will be my hunting rifle this fall and should do well. But it is an old unit and I am thinking I might want to find a modern action in the same caliber for future years hunting and to pass the Swede onto my oldest son in a couple of years when he is old enough to come hunting with me. I have done some website browsing and don't see many current manufacturers carrying that caliber. So, what is available and from who?

Thanks,
Mark

Tikka and Sako for sure.
Nothing wrong with the 96 Swede. I have a few and they will outlive me when I pass them down. The new guns are good too, but lack old school milled metal and craftsmanship. Lots of plastic and CNC in the new ones.

I still find hunters talk more about older guns than new ones. The appeal for new guns hasn't caught on where I live in woodlands Ontario. Once in awhile someone shows up with a new synthetic Sako, but it never draws much attention. Beautiful wood stocks catches the eye every time and nobody cares much for the action except the beholder.

Sako, Tikka, CZ, Steyr Mannlicher. (See a trend? ;) )

I have a Remington 700 Classic chambered in 6.5x55mm that I hold near and dear. :)

If you're considering a Sako you mike want to consider building one off a rem700 long action or Savage LA. Putting a custom barrel on and you'll probably have a very nice rig.

I'm waiting on a LA to come on the EE and I'll probably end up building one. Love that caliber.

The Swede will work in 90% of actions with a 308 bolt face, but with Lapua and other top-end components that are built to the proper specs for the Swede, they may be a bit snug on the bolt face. The base of the Swede is .480", the 308 is .470"

Incredible round, capable of amazing long distance and accuracy... phenomenal considering it has been around for more than 115 years!

We've got a S/S walnut #1 in 6.5X55 on the way. Should be strong enough ;)

I'm not sure my wallet is strong enough for that, though...;)

You could have one built on a 98 mauser. It could be made as plain or fancy as your pocket book would allow.

I do have a beater 98 sporter in 8x57 that I have been keeping for the action and this thought has crossed my mind before. I guess we think alike.

A Savage with accutrigger and a nice laminate stock was my first choice when I started this thread.

I agree, it is close to the optimal cartridge for medium sized game out to 400yds or so. I am planning on using it for deer and moose this fall and maybe elk if things work out right.

Thanks for the thoughts and info, guys.

Might as well just go with a Sako instead of spending a bunch of money dicking around with your rifle and still not getting something as good.

Ruger has made them in the M77 as well, but not currently...

Yes... I have one and it is very nice. Though I am thinking about having a 6.5x55 built on a stainless ruger M77 action with stainless barrel all put into a canoe paddle stock with wood inserts to replace it ;)

I used to have a winchester feather weight in 6.5x55 which was also very nice.

My favourite rifle- a FAIR O/U chambered for my favourite cartridge - 6.5X55 Swede!:D

add Sauer and Blaser, both pricy unfortunately.

Howa does (has?) chambered the model 1500 in 6.5x55, not sure if they are available in all markets.
