I am allways in foul mood, whenever I see those "hero" crosses and other german militaria. Whatever the reason those medals were given, it was for wrong cause. Regardless the bravery, how somebody be a hero to decimate and enslave dozens of other nations with never ending agresions over the centuries? If it comes to my grammar; english is not my mother language, not even the second, so I have nothing to appologise for. Also; I am 6'3" and 250lbs and like elephant in pottery store, if I happen to have stepped on couple of sensitive toes, I don't appologise either!

Yet another tool that can't distinguish between the Wermacht and the SS totenkamph (sp?) divisions.
Read a book.

I used to work with a guy that was a german tank driver in WWII. Joined up when he was 16 and they were desperate for soldiers. The things they did to non-combatants were despicable.

Lets forget about heroism behind; operating mustard gas dispenser, killing innocents, rape and pillage.

Are you describing the hardships the soldiers who earned those medals had to endure or are you commenting on what they may have perpetrated? I don't see much in the literature to indicate that my grandfather's enemies were any worse sort of folks then those they fought against.
The men who served the wermacht were serving thier nation and thier comrades not much diffrent then any other soldier. Yeah war sucks and it will be nice when humanity figures ways around it but till then knowledge goes a long way to stem the hate (as you expressed) that leads to it.

My grandfather fought the SS for 6 weeks straight (until he was crippled) I never heard him utter a word of hate about anyone.

The things they did to non-combatants were despicable.

Like firebombing civilians in Hamburg while leaving (soon to be forsale) factories unscathed or how about the 100,000 or so women raped in berlin once hostilites had ceased? I always find photos of Hiroshima help to put things in perspective.

Kinda sounds like you'd be all for a pre emptive strike agaisnt the civilian population of Germany in order to put an end to the scourge? God knows we should let all those fraulines produce another batch of baby killers? I mean hundreds of years of never ending aggression sounds like a good excuse to impliment a final solution, right?

I had an Uncle[ Aunt's second marriage]that was in the German Army. All my other Uncles served on the Allied side and held no grunge against him what so ever.It was not optional when they said you're joining the German Army so saddle up.The SS are a different breed altogether hated by their own regular army.a neighbour lady when I lived in Ont. was part of the Hitler Youth and damned near ended up in jail or worse for missing one meeting............Good idea READ A BOOK or talk to some vets.Harold

I guess since Stalins paranoia enabled him to order the murder of hundreds of thousands of his own citizens/subjects, that makes every Russian a scum sucking pile of cat vomit???

Guess they had better take the "Hero of the Soviet Union" medal away from Zaitsev because he was nothing more than a dirty Bolshevik...

BTW: To paint a brush over all the SS as "murderers", would be too simple. I agree that overall the "Allgemeine-SS" has been at the core of most of the atrocities perpetrated by the 3rd Reich, but there are also the Waffen SS (Fighting SS) Divisions that were famous and also infamous for good deeds and bad... Don't be tricked into thinking that the Wehrmacht was "pure" either. They detested the SS mainly because the Wehrmacht was a (Prussian) stuck up, apolitical, behemoth that did not want any competition for being top dog in Germany. The Wehrmacht committed many atrocities as well and definitely helped with the "Endlosung" Final Solution, though usually limited to Military Police actions. "Try reading: Ordinary Men - Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland".

Let those who committed barbarous acts be prosecuted accordingly, in this life or the next.
But let all the old soldiers keep their medals, and let's stop bad mouthing the sacrifices they made for their country. Even if they did end up on the wrong side.

Whoa guys! War sucks, bad things happen, bad people do bad things on both sides. Sometimes though, people do remarkably selfless things and get medals for them. Lets not launch into a political/ethical debate on war here, the guy just wants some info on some medals here... sheesh...

lister, There is and never was any such thing as an "honorable war". There are decent, brave men on all sides. When it hits the fan though, they do what they have to if they want to survive. Sociopaths rejoice at the opportunities war presents them with but usually settle for politics as it's safer there and they can force some one else to do their dirty work and dieing for them.
The world is full of non combatants that get in the way. They get displaced, shot, starved and raped every day. They are defenceless and are kept that way by organisations like the UN and their ilk that are really closet sociopathic megalomaniacs, that for some reason have been allowed to put themselves on pedestals.

For the most part, I really like and respect soldiers and wouldn't begrudge them, any of them their symbols of recognition.

gunrunner8, why are you in Canada? Not that I don't welcome you, but what are you running from? Something made your home land unbearable or you wouldn't be here. You've come to a land of peace and opportunity, leave the hatred at home. Many soldiers of enemy countries come to Canada and make a good life. They leave the hatred behind them, where it belongs.

There are "nazi" types wherever you go, all over the world. In some parts they are in power and respected. There are even a few here and some of them are in power. They are trying to disarm you and I. Most of them are lemmings, to lethargic or emotional to think and see beyond the realities.

many people also seem to forget the Fire bombings that the USA did on the japanese , how many square miles of tokyo and other cites burnt to the ground...

What does this piece of personal information have to do with the discussion? You cannot "persuade" people to your ideas through personal size and power. This is the internet. Here you must use words correctly and effectively to persuade people to your ideology.

Yep... all you can do in a war is hope you aren't ever in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Google "My Lai Massacre" for some US vs women and children massacre; maybe not to the same scale (in terms of loss of life), but just as appalling if not more so.

Hell, I'm sure there's been a few Canadians that have done some brutal things that we'll never know.

Back to the medals... nice find :)

For me it goes the same with every piece of war memorabilia, be it medal, boot, belt, helmet... I am interested in the name and story behind each piece. They all belonged to someone not all that different than any of us. I'm not a soldier but I have a few friends in Afghanistan and they tell me they fight for the person to the left and right of them, not for the ideals of someone in an office far away.
