Sig Mosquito, Yes or No?

I've had a lot of fun with mine. i broke it in on cci mini-mags and now it shoots bulk ammo with little or no problems.

Mine shot federal bulk ammo no problem and was a lot of fun. I recently sold it to get the .22 conversion kit for my 226 because I want to improve my 9mm shooting and thought this would be a better way to go. I enjoyed my mosquito though and only had trouble with AE ammo. I would buy one used form someone trustworthy though as it sounds like there were some lemons in the early batches. If cash was not an issue I would not have sold mine as it was a lot of fun.

Ruger vs. Sig

I've got 3 .22's
One Smith K22 Masterpiece (revolver)
One Sig Mosquito and one Ruger Mk III Target (heavy barrell)
The sig was finicky to start with as I got it dirty and had low velocity rounds. When i put in higher velocity ones it was fine. Someone at the range showed me how to dismantle it and clean it and it started taking the slower stuff too but to use slower stuff all the time i was told to install the other spring i have for it and this,ll clean up the feeding troubles.
I'm selling the Sig just cause its way too small for my hands, I'm keeping the Ruger because it fits me perfectly.

Only used one. It would only eat stingers and that was it. Anything else would jam it solid.

Ruger MK 1 on the other hand ate anything you could toss at it and never ever jammed.

I bought a Sig P229 Classic 22 and really like it. It's had no problems with about 6 different kinds of ammo. I may buy a conversion kit for it somewhere down the road.

I'll second for the smith 41. I bought one used but almost new. It only likes certain ammo. If you feed it the good stuff it runs great. Not all 22's semi can handel anything that will fit in the mag.

My sig is great. Mini-mag NEVER has had a hang-up and Federal bulk ammo works great for the first 200 rounds or so before it starts to gunk up the workings because it's so dirty. You'll get the odd stovepipe here and there afterwards until the gun is cleaned. Nothing else I've experimented with works that well (winchester super-x, other cci stuff). Don't buy a used one, buy a new one (some of the older serial number used ones were reported as having a lot more problems, which is why there are so many bad reviews on line).

That said, I can't argue with anyone who suggests you look into a CZ Kadet instead. :)

I fully agree! Get a Kadet, worth the extra money and you won't be dissapointed. Plus it will last longer than the Sig or Walther.

Hey guys im a newbie who just got his PAL and im looking at what to buy. I was thinking of going with the Sig mosquito as a starter handgun. Ive read some good reviews and some bad reviews so im hoping someone here can give me the final verdict.

Maybe a misprint in your post but you may have to wait first for your RPAL. That aside I'm in the "other" category - go with a Ruger or a Buckmark if you're interested in a semi-auto 22 pistol instead of the Sig mosquito.

Good, bad, otherwise...

I hear nothing but good things about the Mosquito as far as reviews are concerned. It is however a .22 cal, marketed as an entry level pistol. Ammo is cheap, but you will undoubtedly outgrow it in no time... Your call.

If you get one make sure the serial# is above 40000 as this is when the second gen. came out. Mine is in the 55000's and works great with cheap winchester 333's from walmart. Does not like Federal champions though. I say go for it.

I was offered a few rounds out of one at the range last week. I can't speak for long-term reliability, feeding, etc. but my initial reaction was that I really didn't like the trigger pull at all- very long and "stagey". Familiarity with the pistol would likely help that, of course. But I also shot a S&W M&P in 9mm the same day; it also is a double-action but the trigger was much, much better, in my opinion. A .22 with a similar trigger would be OK for me if I were looking for a double-action.

I have a Ruger MkII with the bull barrel and although the trigger could use tuning, I find I much prefer it. The only downside to the Ruger is the usual complaint: you need a degree in mechanical engineering and the muscle control of an engraver to reassemble the thing after cleaning. (OK- I exaggerate, but it is a bit tricky until you've done it a number of times!)

I guess it depends what sort of pistol you're drawn to. The Mosquito looks like a modern D/A military pistol; the Ruger is single action, all steel (unless you were to opt for a 22/45) and more of a target gun, at least with the bull barrel. The Buckmark is similar.

If your budget allows it, you might check out Armco's website (sponsor banner at top of page); he has a Hi-Standard Supermatic for $649 which would be a very nice target gun indeed.

Personally, my vote would be for a Ruger.

I love my mosquito. Yah, its ammo fussy. It functions flawlessly with mini mags or stingers. The problem is the weight of the hammer spring. Light .22 loads will not drop it down enough with the slide action to the rear usually resulting in a failure to feed. I have a smith model .22a with a heavy barrel as well and i forgot what it looks like. The SIG is more fun to shoot. ..and its cheap enough tp make complaining pointless. It was designed as a sub-calibre training pistol for its bigger brothers. If you want pure reliabilty in a handgun get a GLOCK. :nest:

Now that you can get a real 226 - or a real 220 - in .22LR, the Mosquito makes no sense.

Buy a real pistol.

Swapping out receivers makes no sense, especially when the sub cal receiver cost as must as the other friggin pistol. The only thing i swap out on a regular basis is my wife.

My wife and I each bought Mosquito's as our first handguns and we've had no problems with them in the 8 months we've owned them. They are very fun to shoot with and so far quite reliable.
