I'm not sure "restoration" applies when you're not even considering applying a correct metal or wood finish. Amber shellac is so easy to come by but you put stain and verathane on it? If anything looks crappier than shellac when it starts to peel and flake, it's verathane.

I would be pretty mad too if someone did that to one of my rifles, how did he get your gun anyways?... What? its not yours and its actually his? then he can do whatever he wants to it. Relax man, it looks good, its a restoration, no matter what you say.
I'm not sure most people would accept your "anything goes" definition of restoration. What sucks is that some self-proclaimed milsurp enthusiasts ruin rifles that they do not understand are artefacts as much as functional pieces of equipment.
It's not a restoration no matter what you say. It's a bubba-fication. It's his rifle - he can bubba it if he wants. That doesn't mean he SHOULD, and it doesn't make it less sad!
First off, good job on the refinish - it will go a long way to ensuring that your rifle will stay happily by your side for many a year. If you are happy with it, then kudos to you.
I just wish that it hadn't been a milsurp. Unfortunately, even mismatched, it was probably worth more as an SVT-40 before the verathane and duracoat then after. However, if you are not worried about it's resale or collector value, then it's a moot point.
At any rate, this rifle may very well make someone an interesting project gun someday. Duracoat can be stripped, and the stock can be refinished. As far as I can tell, there wasn't anything done to this rifle that isn't reversable in the proper hands. It's not like he chopped the barrel of an Enfield, or drilled and tapped for a scope.

It looks GREAT! Look forward to hearing how it shoots. You really did a fine job turning a group of parts into a really nice looking rifle that 99.99% of the fellows on this board would be pleased to own. The "purists" are welcome to go without...I would really enjoy that rifle.
Awesome job. I'm not familiar with varethane, but if its a polyurethane finish, then it sure isn't going to flake, peel or fade as one poster suggested.
I like the stain, like you said, a little dark, but hey, it looks nice and you can shoot through 12" diameter tree trunks from 1/2 a mile away with it. What more do you want.

I like it, well done. You took bits and made something nice out of it. Besides if all is reversible then it's far from butchery.
