Well I wasnt getting any response in the Ammo Thread, so I thought I would try it here....

Got my moose license for this fall here in N.B. and was wondering what you guys think would be the better bullet....180 Gr. Swift Scirocco Bonded or 180 Gr. Core Lokt Ultra Bonded. Yes i know both will do the job and then some but do ya think one would be better then the other for Moose?
They also offer a 200 Gr. Swift A-Frame but i already have lots of the previous 2 mentioned so the 200 Gr is out of question.

The Swift Scirocco has the best ballistics on paper, but we all know that doesnt always mean the best "on game" performance. I'm pretty set on using the Scirocco's.

I would use a real gun! like your new 7600 in .35 Whelen CARBINE.
I'm sure the moose will want to thank you for the .35 calaber pill.

Send me your e-mail address i think i lost it.

Thanks! Tikka

I have a 300 rum also . In the last two years I have taken 3 dear and one moose stick with the ultra bonded core locks they show the same penetration and dont do the same meat damage as observed by my hunting partners and myself mice to moose the rum rocks !

The 300Rum is pretty tough on bullets.
I would choose an Accubond, Partition, or TSX.

180 grains will work, but IMHO the 200 grain bullets are where its at with the 300 Ultra.

I had a 30-378, it was pretty hard on bullets too, same velocity roughly or a touch more, but I used 200 grn Accubonds because they held togather really well even out of those cannons. PLus the BC is .588, pretty hard to beat it's ballistics.

JT.

I would go with the Scirroco's. I think they fly a little flatter if you are sitting where the ranges are a tad longer. They are also plenty tough.

The scirocco's worked too well(too much damage) on deer for me out of my 300rum but I now reload the 300rum and use the tsx bullet. It had less damage on the deer I shot with it but it was also quite a long shot compared to the scirocco. It can be found in federal factory loads as well.

I have only shot one 4pt bllacktail deer with my 300RUM using 180gr Scirroco's @ 3380fps and the distance was only 40 yards as it walked uphill towards me.

I hit it in the left side front chest just below the neck the bullet hit the spine between the shoulder blades and did not exit I could not find any remains of the bullet though I'm thinking it blew up when it hit the spine.

I'm not calling it a bullet failure though it killed the deer instantly and what do you expect the bullet was still doing 3300fps when it hit.

What was surprising is that there was hardly any meat damage.

Everything I have shot with my 300RUM since has been with 200gr Swift A-Frames @ 3250fps muzzle velocity.

I believe either of the bullets you are asking about will do the job for you.

Given that moose is the intended quarry I do believe the Scirroco could let you down on a closer range deeply angled shot. The bullet is not in the same league as an X-Bullet, Accubond, or (as Camp suggested) Swift.

I have a 30-416 and a 300 Win that I use extensively for LR work. It is tough to beat the 200 Accubond for this sort of stuff.
Try it!....It works far and close!

I am with X-Fan. The 300 RUM is a round that is begging to be loaded with 200 gr. Accubond for the bigger stuff at distance.

I am not of that opinion.Having killed a dozen or so elk and moose with the 300RUM,I like the performance of the 180gr tsx.I see no need for a 200gr bullet.

Yes, the 180 TSX is a fine moose bullet. No arguement there.
The 180 Scirroco on moose at high velocity and close range....not so much.

The 180 TSX is a great bullet at standard hunting ranges (maybe the best), but it takes the back seat of the bus when compared to the 200 Accubond (and others) for real long range performance.

Load the 180 TSX in the 300 Ultra then load the 200 Accubond in a 300 Win.
At 400 yards the 300Win will have less wind drift, similar velocity, drop, and more retained energy than the 300 Ultra.....The 300 Ultra is one of the ultimate long range cartidges...Why handicap it with a short range bullet?

BTW Barnes is somewhat less than truthful about the ballistic coefficient of most of the TSX bullets.

Well I'm gonna go with the 180gr. scirocco's and where I'm gonna be sitting I cant see the shot being any LESS then 100-150 yards, and it could stretch out to well beyond 500 yards!

I load the 180grTSX to 3380fps and it works fine to 500 yards which is my personal limit on game. Now that the TTSX is available, that is an even better choice.
As to Barnes B.C.s,I have shot the bullets to 500 yards,so I am well aware of the actual trajectory, which is a good indication of the B.C..

As to the Accubond,it is a good bullet, but I prefer the on game performance of the TSX/TTSX.It's not all about trajectory and wind drift,if I have to give up a little for the best performance on game,I will do so.
