Would I be wasting my time getting a PAL AND AN RPAL?

"AR" is short for "Assault Rifle", usually in reference to a military, full automatic weapon, such as the M-16 or AK-47, as an example.

Here in Canada, we still use the term "AR", but we use it to describe our semi-automatic, civilian legal versions of these firearms, which are generally restricted class and used for target practice.

Wrong, AR is short for ARMILTE http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AR-15

EXACTLY!!!!!! There is NO SUCH THING AS AN ASSAULT RIFLE!!!! An Assault Weapon is anything ANYTHING that you choose to assault someone with. A 22LR single shot is an assault weapon if you assault someone with it, same with a baseball bat, a spoon, a golf bag, your pet cat. This term Assault Weapon (rifle etc.) has to go from our vocabulary.

OP, get your restricted class PAL, join a club, buy a revolver, buy a pistol, buy a restricted semi-auto rifle of any kind you like. Get out and shoot.

Actually the Sturmgewehr 44 was the first true assault rifles, all others that follow the basic layout are classified as such.

"...The charter of rights and freedoms allows freedom to own property..." You should read it. You have no property rights whatsoever. Property rights were specifically left out of Trudeau's constitution.
"...all others that follow the basic layout are classified as such..." Only by the media and idiot politicians. By definition, (select fire, mag fed, in the same calibre as the PBI rifle, but using a smaller case.) the Stg44 and AK47 are the only real assault rifles ever made. Everything else is a battle rifle.
Get the RPAL. There are no guarantees about anything in the future. Especially when it comes to firearms. If and when the Socialist F**ks get into power again, they likely will ban handguns. Their policy is to not have private firearm ownership in Canada, but that's not going to happen any time soon. There may or may not be a 'grandfather' clause, but history shows there will.
Meanwhile, jump the hoops and go have fun.

Get the PAL/RPAL get a rifle, shotgun and 2 handguns then educate as many people as you can so they get their own PAL/RPAL and guns that way we start a circle of continual GUN owner Renewal.

Mine as well do it in one shot. The extra $100 or so bucks is worth it especially if one day, people would envy RPAL and PPAL would graduate to godly status! Me thinks on the contrary. It would be a waste of time if you didn't get it. ;-)

Most people I know who get their regular PAL and don't do the restricted end up regreting it down the road when they decide to get pistols. Might as well just do the extra day worth of class and then you have it.

I almost didn't mine in 1996 because there was huge talk about prohibiting all handguns, and here we are all these years later and we're still out shooting. *shrug* Do 'er!
