Well, I was looking forward to a great day at the range today with my newly modified SKS. As this is the first firearm I have ever modified, I was quite excited. Nothing too crazy yet, I've changed the stock to a Tapco, added a muzzle brake, replaced the receiver cover with a NcStar SKS Tri-Mount and added a scope.

I finally got everything set-up on the range, loaded and made ready for my first shot with my new rifle.

Bang.....

Crack....

???????

I thought it sounded a little wierd and right away I noticed my slide was stuck all the way back and jammed. I dropped my mag. and made safe and upon inspection noticed a small crack in my new receiver cover and the slide was jammed back so hard I couldn't even knock it back out with a nearby piece of wood. (See Pics)

Has this happened to anyone else???? Did I somehow do something wrong when I fitted it??? Or does this just sound like a faulty cover???? It was a nice and tight fit (not too tight) and not loose.

When I got home I had to use a hammer to knock the slide back and found it was jammed on the underside of the small slide handle against the receiver cover. When I re-installed the original cover everything seems fine again. Guess I'll have to try and fire it this way now and see what happens.:(

it shouldnt get jammed like that but i must admit , according to your pic the front prongs of the tri-mount is a bit high so im not surprised .

does it jam when you #### the handle all the way back ?

You have done some nice mods but take it from me. If you want a scope or red dot spend the money on a quality mount. As far as I am concerned the only decent mounts out there are SCOUTMOUNT and a drill and tap mount make by CHOATE. Goggle them and check them out. My perference is the SCOUTMOUNT, the only thing is you need a long eye relief scope between 10 and 14 inches of relief.

No it didn't seem to when I had set everything up on the bench. The slide seemed a little tight mid stroke but at full #### it always came back. I guess I could have filed the top of the right side prong down a bit for clearance but with the crack there this peice is useless anyways.

Thanks bjs, I looked into the Scoutmount, it looks quite sturdy and well mounted but I loose the use of the iron sights. I could live with that I guess though but I'd have to find another scope to work with the new set-up. I'll still have to check out the mount made by Choate, I've heard good things about those aswell from others but I wasn't looking forward to drilling and tapping. Thanks for the suggestions, they are much appreciated.

I have a Choate, very good overall, and I still can use stripper clips.
It cost me $75 to install it.
Some people who tried to fire my SKS says that the scope is too high for them. I can not say anything on that matter as I have nothing else to compare with.
But I still can use irons and slips, and that is important for me.

Ncstar produces crap product.

This is not the first one I have seen fail.

Receiver cover scope mounts on an SKS are useless.

I agree that NCStar is crap. I bought one for my SKS and it took me about 3 hrs of dremmel work to buff that thing to a very tight fit.

In the end I decided to stick to the normal cover.

It will be on my "To Sell" table at the next local gunshow.

If you look again at the Scoutmount you still have a iron sight. The Scoutmount has a rear iron sight made into the mount, just remove your optic that is attached to the weaver rail and there is.

NcStar Receiver mount versus Choate drill n tap mount

Hello,
I did alot of internet searchs on the NcStar receiver mounts and have found that there is too much dremel grinding and filing to be done as every SKS is not the same so they leave this extra metal for you to fight with.:puke:
There is also a post that I read about the inside of the NcStar receiver mount that has to be ground down as it will interfere with the bolt sliding back and jamming.
The tolerences are tight due to the fact that this style may move after firing and it's a pain to remove to properly clean your rifle.
I understand that the rifle is a economically priced rifle but I want to dress this one up. (Bipod, Stock, Muzzle brake, and of course a scope).
I finally decided to buy the Choate side mount and will drill and tap it in place.
$42 from the U.S (SKSMAN).
I am patiently waiting for it's arrival.:)

Thanks.
