Cleaning my AR-15's chamber.

Wow, there's an awful lot of confusing information in this thread. What are you using your rifle for? What's wrong with just wadding some scrap cloth around the end of an old toothbrush, spraying it with CLP and gently scrubbing the chamber? Power drills and metal brushes sound like serious overkill to me...

I was thinking the same thing, for most general cleaning a simple kit with lots of swabs and q-tips work fine. I have most of the tools in this package for the detailed cleanings, they make spring cleaning a lot more pleasant, notice the tool chamber cleaning and one that cleans the extension that uses those dentist swabs.

Greentips is right, in almost 30 years of shooting AR's and thousands of rounds, I have yet to use the issued chamber brush. I just use a large patch (0.30cal size) on my cleaning rod, dip it in Hoppe's or CLP and wipe the chamber. I've never yet had a problem with chambering. If you are lucky enough to fire full auto a lot :p, then a chamber brush might be needed, otherwise, IMHO, you're just wasting time and effort  For cleaning the barrel extention, I flush it with my trusty spray can of WD40 and just use pieces of cut up paper towels and q-tips to dry it out. It doesn't have to be sqeaky clean, just get most of the carbon crap out.

What parts of the gas system can and should be cleaned? Does the interior of the tube need any maintenance? How about where it meets up with the bolt carrier?

The gastube is selfcleaning. All that pressure when firing will blow any carbon into the bolt carrier. When I removed the gastube from my Colt HBAR after firing 5000 rounds or so, it was still nice and clean and I put it back it without cleaning. Occassially, I twirl a q-tip with a bit of Hoppe's into the carrier tube, but I don't think it is really necessary.

I dont use a chamber brush either. I use a large patch on a loop with hoppes as a cleaner and CLP for storage. Always seems to get it nice and clean. I think the champer brush is a PITA.
