Looking for opinions. I bought a gun a while back. The seller was a little slow responding but no real problem. I sent the MO and my info. In about a week and a half the gun arrived. I PMed and said thanks and could we please get the transfer done. He responded with, I'm on hollidays and could we do it in a week when I get back. I said fine no worries. Its now been 2 extra weeks and still no tranfer. I've sent serveral PMs and no responses. Do I try and contact the CFC? I guess best case sinario would be its unregistered and not stolen. Don't want to open a can of worns but would like to get the thing in my name.

Seller shouldnt have sent it until it was in your name. For his safety and yours. I'm not sure contacting the CFC would help. You're either in possesion of an unregistered gun, or a gun registered to someone else. The CFC can't transfer it without all the owners information, and he would still have to call to confirm the transfer if you started it.
It's in your possesion and his firearms license and/or criminal record is at stake(bear in mind under C68 that you are responsible for firearms registered to you, theoritically), so you're in the drivers seat.

Things happen in people's lives. Two weeks isn't much time at all, I wander out of town for two or three months at a time on occasion. And the last thing you want to do is phone the CFC and say "I'm in illegal possession of a firearm, please can you send your minions to make me bubba's #####". You, as a buyer, can initiate the transfer as well. Call up the CFC, give them the serial# and they can start the transfer. Contact seller, give him the reference #, and he can finish it.
You are not in illegal possesion of a firearm, as you are licensed, and there is an amnesty in place. If the firearm is not registered, then they will register it for you. If that is the case, then you don't need the seller for anything.
If it ends up that it was stolen, then you'll need to deal with the RCMP anyway to get your $$ back...
The buyer has had enough time...It only takes 2 minutes on the phone to start a transfer, and you can do that from anywhere in the world, even if you're on holidays.
People go on like its a major hassle or something, and this isn't the first time I've heard this scenerio...

Sounds like the seller is being some what delinquant not completeing the transfer. If you have any info at all on the seller try googling his name and address and try to call him. If not you are kind at a mexican stand off to get a hold of him. The CFC might not be so understanding becuase technically he's not suppose to ship until the transfer has been completed and approved. Your only choice is to register it under amnesty which is on until May 2010. Unless you can reach the seller and have him take care of it. I would definately give him a very bad trader rating if he doesn't come through with the transfer. Is he a newbie or someone that has done a lot of trades?

Excellent advice! That would be my course of action.
There seems to be a lot of fear and paranoia out there regarding the transfer of non-restricted fireams. If you have a valid firearms license,which I'm sure you do, consider the gun to be on loan until the trannsfer is complete. There cannot be any "illegal possesion of a firearm" just because it's not registered, or not registered to you.
If it turns up as stolen, strip it to the bare receiver and turn in only that part, this is the part that is considered to be a firearm under the criminal code as it holds the serial number. I'd like to see the look on the officer's face when one "turns in", for sake of example...a 700 BDL 300 Win Mag with 4.5-14X Leupold in a small plastic shopping bag.

Well, for me it meant buying in person or at the local shop...The internet wasn't what it is now back in the mid 90's...
But now, you'd send payment and receive the gun, only without all the paperwork. Its no different than buying a $800 scope from the EE, they're not registered either...
MTM, At the very least, if you call the CFC and explain that you've been waiting for pokey to start the transfer, they may make a call to him on your behalf...Or you call him and inform him that the RCMP will be contacting him.

Blargon hit the nail on the head you can call the CFC as the buyer and initiate the transfer then just call the seller up with the ref # and he can call the CFC to complete the transfer. If they ask you who has possesion of the firearm tell them you have, as long as you have a PAL its a borowed gun period. It's real simple but some sellers need there hand held!
