Looking for a new rifle

I've got a nice deer rifle, but am looking at getting another. I want something a bit smaller/shorter for handling when pushing through bush. As such, the caliber doesn't need much long-range performance either.

I'm thinking 30-30 for cheap, readily available ammo (I don't reload), little recoil, and often chambered in guns that meet the above description. I think a 7mm-08 might be nice, and have long wanted a 6X55mm Swede, but am concerned about the limited factory loadings. Any suggestions on other calibers/models to consider?

I've requested to be part of your exclusive club of buy/sell listings. How long does that process take? Is it some sort of waiting period?

All of your calibre choices are excellent.
6.5 X 55 factory loads are more than sufficient for deer, and a sporterized Swede would fit the bill.
Ruger has the Frontier model in 7mm-08... a combination I've coveted for a while.
 
Personal I like the 7-08 caliber for the tasks you listed above. As for a rifle make take your pick with 7-08 everyone makes a rifle in that caliber.
 
I like lever action carbines for this application....44 Mag is cool and my personal pic, 30-30 is a classic, 454 Casull would be neat but pricy ammo.
 
There is just something nastalgic about still hunting in the forest with a .30-30 lever. The new Mossbergs look interesting and not a bad price.
 
CZ 858-2, I'm sorry I sold mine, not only was the surplus ammo dirt cheap for plinking, but it was one handy little bush rifle.
 
Was looking for a rifle with the exact same requirements for my wife. We bought a Marlin 336 in 30-30, put a Pachmeir recoil pad on it. It pretty much kicks like a .22.
It seems to be a really nice rifle, and lets face it, if a hardware store has 2 calibres of factory ammo, odds are they'll be 30-30 and .270.(and of course 12ga)
The only dislike of the rifle we've found, is the gold on the front site. A touch of red nail polish and that's fixed.
The action seems stout, and it shoots well with nearly all the loads we've tried.
I wasn't impressed with the stock finish from the factory, but a coat of hand rubbed oil every cleaning has now given it a beautiful patina that we like.
It's short, light, and accurate. While I'm sure others would meet your requirements, I'm also sure you wouldn't regret a 336 in 30-30.

I especially enjoyed that Tradex site. Now I believe I need a few old double-barreled shotguns and a Swedish target rifle too! I think I'll sleep on that one before I buy more guns.

I agree the 7.62 X 39 SKS would do the trick, but they sure are ugly. I'm leaning toward the 30-30 level unless I can find a little bolt action for a similar price.

Maybe this is another thread, but how often do cartridges "die" commercially - that is to say, what are the chances of a load becoming so obsolete that no one manufacturers it any longer?

I'm sure they will be around for another 100 + years.
 
Watch the EE for a bolt 30-30.(suggestion) I picked up a CIL(savage made) bolt to compliment her lever. Put a side mount scope on it so she has one scoped and one iron sights depending on where and what we're hunting.
Yes calibre's become obsolete. I have an acquantance(sp?) who's constantly searching for ammo.

my vote would be with 7mm/08 drops them dead like they have been hit with lightning,mild recoil and you can buy almost any brand rifle in it. I think they are the most under rated caliber out there.
 
that will be my next cartridge . the 7-08.its a toss up between a kimber rifle or the browning titanium .
