need some help with recommendations

Buy a used Savage 300WM with sporter barrel and then buy a heavy match grade barrel and have it installed. I think that will be about your cheapest route to a 300WM with a quality barrel.

A new or used savage or remington with heavy barrel and either .223(with the right twist) or any of the .308 family(.243, .260,7mm/08, or .308) can prolly be done for $600 or so. The Rem. 700 would be my pick as it is easiest to upgrade later.

So you never did say what kind of accuracy you are looking for. Do you want .5MOA at 300m?.5MOA@600?

If you are looking for something just to plink with at long range you can do 1 of 2 things. Save your money and buy something decent, buy a milsurp from Tradex for a few hundred bucks, any of them with VG-Excellent bores chambered in 6.5x55 will most likely be your best bet.

"Many WW2 snipers used rifles I can buy for 300 bucks and hit things at over 500m"

Yeah, but those "things" were man sized targets and most of those rifles had the accuracy title of "minute of man". Which is nothing outstanding, but effective in WWII.

I am not sure but on the EE there was a savage 10FP in .308 for $650. The savage system makes alot of sense. I got a remmington because... well that was a good deal for what I got and i wanted something now insted of waiting to buy a stock and custom stuff that came with my gun...

I just decided to get into the long range stuff and the .308 was what I went for.

Financially the Savage is cheeper but the quality is that or better then remmington and the system works and works well...

if you are going to be blowing off lots of rounds Why not a .223? The .223 will go to 600yds everyday...

I talked to a guy that owns a LR3 Blaser topped off with a S&B AND a leica 1200 range finder and he has only ever shot to 600yds!! and that is what he thinks is LONG RANGE... And then there are people that are shooting stock Remmington R-5's in .308 out to 1300-1500yds.

I would take a good look at that Savage 10FP and see if that will do the trick for you.. it has everything you need to start to shoot, optics included.

..to be used for what? This is the precision rifle forum.

...The question [I want to find an affordable rifle in .338 Lapua Magnum. Is there anything under 600 bucks? ] was answered in the first post...

On your budget what you need to find is a used but well cared for single shot ex-Target Rifle like a Sportco / Omark , Musgrave, CIL/Anschutz or something similar in .308 Winchester.

Many of the old TR shooters are slowly seling off rifles for reasonable amounts of money, often in the $400-$600 range. Those retired TR guns may not look like much but will more often than not shoot like blazes out to 1000 yards.

All you'll need to add is a scope and bipod and you will be off to the races.

Finding one is not that tough. Keep an eye out in the EE and check the for sale pages of the various Provincial Rifle Associations.

He posted the question "What do you think of these?" and then pasted a link to those Aussie Arms Lee-Enfield knock-offs.

From <$600 .338 LM to LE clones.

Probably should be posting these questions in the Newbie section...

Maybe you should pass by this post instead of being a snobby bottomless pocket elitest. It's people like you who turn people off of this sport. Not everyone has 3000 bucks laying around to buy a rifle. But some people think you have to spend alot of money to get stuff done. Some people know its the shooter not the gun.

Like when I got into 2 channel stereo and the guys from the sites who would come on the thread saying if you didnt have $3000 to not waste your time. I built my 2 channel with tube amp for less than 800 and I have guys from my forum that come to visit me and still cant believe what I've done.

So now I'm pissed up and ready to build my shooter for less than 600 bucks just to prove to the other new people here not to listen to the elitest people trying to bring you down

fly at 'er bud. Nothing wrong with using inexpensive components. Hell, I just built a 6.5-08 on a $200 action. Building is the best and most cost-effective way to create the most accurate shooter and anyone here would tell you that. YOUR questions were about complete rifles.

...but being a "a snobby bottomless pocket elitest" abrogates my opinion on the matter.

If you are stuck on that budget I would look for a Remington 700 (not so easy to find under $600, but they are out there), a Savage model 10(pick your suffix) or a if you want to go very cheap, a new Stevens (EDIT: It was PEI Rob that just built on a Stevens not Mysticplayer, but I am sure Mystic has done one too :) ).

For starting out, look for a .308, 6.5x55 or .260Rem. All are factory cartridges and you can start by shooting factory ammo (save on reloading).

Once you are comfortable with the rifle, and your $600 you just spent is replenished, you can take another $600 and get yourself an upgraded barrel. Then when it is replenished again, you can get yourself a nice stock.

Basically what I am trying to say is that if you can't afford the to go all the way right now, at least you can get shooting. If you are new to the game, you will get lots of enjoyment out of a factory rifle and you can upgrade it as your skills improve.

No need to be discouraged, just get the best you can for $600. Just make sure it is a fairly common platform so it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to upgrade later.

For optics.....come and see me when you are ready :)

yeah the Remington seems to be the way to go. I have some time tommorow to go to my local shop and I know they handle a ton of remington so I'm bound to find something thanks

I know exactly what your saying. The thing is there are people that think you need to spent alot and have the best to be able to shoot good. I laugh when I see people buying nightforce/us optics scopes and rings, badger bases. Its all way over priced in the first place, but people get sucked into it. They think well he has it I should have it its all about want want want. Its the Northamerican way. It is a hobby that gets more and more expensive. And most people that build these expensive rifles get bored with them put them in the safe or try to sell them for the same amount that they put into it. Anyway here is a little inspiration for you. I built my .338 Edge for under $700 bucks. I made the stock myself using a mold made from one of my friends mcmillan stocks aluminum bedded and all reinforced with kevlar from an older model bullet proof vest I had. The scope which is a Bushnell 6500 4.5-30x50mm, a $1000 plus scope in canada I got a tactical one for $720 from the states. So all said and done it cost me just over $1400 bucks ammo extra which I will be reloading as soon as I get some data. A few years ago I built a .308 5R Milspec for under $1000 scope included and I am hitting milk jugs at 600+ no problem. Can't wait to see what the .338 will do. But if you are patient and take your time to do the reasearch you can do it. The materials are not expensive its the over pricing builders. Some people pay $50 bucks for a tactical bolt knob and that doesn't include the cost to install it!!:bsFlag:
i bought mine for $30 bucks including shipping and to save money I have been researching so I can install it myself. So good luck.
