He he he...love it/hate it gun and cartridge combo.... my new "one gun for all"

I was kidding of coarse. A freind at the range has a couple of the stubby little things. Not for me but I can see them being very handy.

I gave the .338 a thought but went with the .358 from Propht River because I have a s**t load of molds for the .358 and only one crappy Lee mold for the .338...
Where you able to take the 1/4 rib off yourself or did you take it to a gunsmith?

Actually I think you did good and to my way of thinking these little Frontiers in the .338 and .358 are a most versitile handy little rifle..
Even more handy than my 94/.32 Special...:D
 
okay ill stir it up ,everyone likes it ,i personally hate it and ill tell you why.i like short guns in levers only just a personal thing but if yours has a great balance point i cant nock it,stainless i like and laminate also, i hate rugers not the gun as much as the maker, he was one of the advocates of making center fires with smaller round counts in the magazine hence we have 5 round max in the semi autos, also ruger actions are cast metal not machined ,ever notice why the action on a blued gun is a different colour from the rest usually more purple,rugers also had at one time barrel chatering, they also have stocks that usuallly crack at the tang.as far the 338 federal unless you reload try finding ammo if you run out or lose it or dump it in a river accidently,i would much rather have a caliber like 308 3006 300 mag even the 300 wsm gets more respect than the 338 federal.so there you have it i hope i stirred the pot enough but sriously though congrats on the new gun, any excuse to get a new gun is good enough for me,one cant have enough

Rifle was a smokin deal at 800 ish..., scope was 4 1/2 ....I think he still has a 358 if you are lookin'

I'm currently shooting an LSS in 300 RUM throwing 200 gr. partitions.....this thing is a pussy cat in comparison :)

OK, so here we go: It balances pretty good....but when you are hunting up here, balance doesn't mean squat in the big picture. Tough as nails, quick pointing and dependable count.
Bill Ruger is long dead....This is also the man who brought you the only (until very recently) .556 semi auto that actually takes large mags that is not restricted. Yes he screwed up, but let it go allready...geeez:rolleyes:
Investment casting actually has several advantages over machining....there are pro's and cons for each....but in the big picture it really doesn't matter. Bluing is different? What's bluing? All my guns are silver;)

the .338 federal? Well....it packs more punch than the 06 in a compact package....and besides, EVERYONE has a 30/06, 308, 300....I don't own a 10/22 either (same reason :D ) And the whole "Forget your ammo" argument is as old as the 30/30....if you go through all of the crap to actually get hunting and actually manage to forget the ammo? You are too stoned/drunk/stupid to be hunting to begin with, so it all works out for the best:p
 
true story ,we were up sighting in before the hunt,we were just an hour north of central patricia ,pickle lake. buddy left his 348 wins on the roof of the car and drove off,we drove for hours looking for those two boxes,he eventually had to borrow the camp shotgun and bought slugs in town,weve also had guys go out with their gun and left the magazine in there other jacket pocket .we now bring an extra rifle as a camp gun.last night i was showing my new sbl marlin to some friends and they kept joking about the gun as a silver mirror but then i took there shiney weatherbys and showed how there hevy gloss blue guns shined a hell of lot more ,plus there guns have a 26 inch barrel vs my 18.5 inch gun,when we get into the thick stuff you can here them cursing everytime a branch slams their gun.
 
great rifle, I know where there is a couple more exact rifles. Ive been mighty tempted to scoop one. 338F is a terrific cartridge, and the m77 compact is a great rifle for packing in the bush. Moose and elk beware with that one in your hands! :cool:

Wrong way, do you have access to a chronograph? Id be intersted in the velocity of the shorter barrel. I think a guy could still get 2450 fps with a 210gr, or 2650 fps with a 180gr
 
Well, I've shot a Tikka in 338 federal and it kicks alot more than my 260, but close to the same as my dads 30-06, so good on you for the cal. pick. As far as the gun itself, it looks like a bute, personally I like detachible mags but I own some that are hinged floor plates. All in all congrats! Looks good, but the big question is how does it shoot?
 
Nice rifle--I almost got one very similar but I wanted at least an 18" barrel--only because I heard that it required it for all powder to burn, etc. (not that I know much about that). Range report on the way?
 
I picked up a used M77 Compact in 7mm-08 off the EE earlier this year with an Elite 3200 3-9 on it. Awesome little gun. I LOVE the laminate stainless look and durability. In the bush is great but for me where this gun really shines is on the quad. Strapped onto the horizontal quad rack it sits easily within the width of the quad so isn't getting bashed by trees and branches as I ride in the tighter terrain. Shoots great and for some odd reason I shoot quite well with it (unusual as I'm not a little guy and the rifle is small in my hands). Suits me for whatever reason. Took a black bear with it this spring at ~200 yds - moving shot as he was walking away (quartering) and shot was off hand. A bit lucky as it got him in the neck but he dropped on the spot. Hadn't loaded for it yet so it was just cheap 150 gr factory fodder.

Won't say this is my go to gun now but it surely has moved a couple places closer to the front in the safe and will definitely see some time in the field this fall at some point.
 
I like the laminate/ss look. 338 fed seems interesting, but i'd either pick something smaller if recoil was a concern, or if not just step up to a 300wm. 16" barrel bolt action scoped rifle blows my mind to be honest. 16" barreled rifle to me is a bush gun (fast action with irons) a do it all would be 20" with possible bolt action and scope.

Compact stock? it looks really long to me?

Smaller? The 338 Fed is a 338/08....the only smaller BG cartridges would be the 308 or the 7/08....see all thos "08's" ? :D The recoil really isn't bad at all anyway. Now...the scoped 16" thing....stop thinking of it as a "scoped 16" rifle", and start thinking of it as a bolt action which throws 338 bullets at 30/06 velocities and puts three of them inside 3/4" at 100m...the scope makes way more sense then.

The stock is the one that came from the factory on this rifle, and it is actually quite trim. The short barrel distorts the overall look though. LOP is a very short 12 1/2", which is AWESOME with my hunting coat and/or pack on :)
 
It looks pretty nifty, but I have two minor quibbles:

-Ruger should have gone with a 18" barrel. It would still be a very compact rifle and you would get higher muzzle velocities and less muzzle blast
-I would have chosen a more compact scope, such as the Leupold 1.5-5x20
 
Different stokes for different folks I guess.

I'll give you the 338 fed, there's no reason why it should be over looked. It kills deer-moose dead just like a .260-300wm or anything else does, and there's nothing more I hate then a long drawn out discussion why somebody should pick x over y when they have the end effing result. I wouldn't pick it myself, but as I said, different stokes.

By the sounds of it you hunt more bush, but want to be ready for the just in case swamp or field shot. Now given I have no idea of your age (eye sight), and honestly you probably trump my knowledge and experience, I still don't understand the bolt action short barrel scoped bush rifle. There's many lever, pump, and semi action rifles that are just as quick with irons that'll be able to do the "just in case" shot, granted experienced hunters often shouldn't need that quick follow up shot, but it does happen. My main pet peeve is the scope. If your primary hunting is bush to the extent you want a 16" barrel then why the hell do you want the extra bulk of that scope? If your not in the bush the amount it sounds like you are and can live with a scope, you can live with the extra barrel length and gain the extra volocity. Now again you don't need the extra bang, but really then why the 338? why not just get a .260 and call it a day.

Rifles are so personal, maybe you just like bolt actions and your eyes are a bit old which is fine. Or maybe you can just buy a bolt action scoped rifle and shoot 3/4" at 100y that just happens to be 16" and i'm way off the mark. Nothing like a good rifle discussion before bed :)
