Finally had a chance yesterday to give the Savage MKIIF (Accutrigger) with 3-9 x 32AO Bushnell Sportview scope, a 100 Meter workout. Bought gun/scope off EE three weeks ago, "used" in great cosmetic condition but with unknown number of shots. From the wear on the bolt blueing, I'd say it's fired a few bricks.

Easily shot 1 inch groups with Winchester Dynapoints, 40 grain plated, unlisted velocity. Based on the muzzle report, they are probably standard velocity. Definitely much lower velocity than Win Expert HV which delivered a loud crack and higher felt recoil, and poor 2.5 - 3 inch groups.

More often than not, I could see the hole print right at the Point of Aim. Any hit outside one inch group was definitely a shooter induced flyer. This Savage shoots slightly better than my CZ452 Varmint or Style.

IMO, a two hundred dollar gun in stock condition, shooting cheap bulk ammo has no right to shoot 1 MOA.

Am I just lucky? Any body else with similar experience?

I got the BV, 1 inch groups @ 50 is a non issue (with no wind ofcourse), with all the cheap ammo I have tried so far. Haven't really played with her out to a 100 yet.

While I like Dynapoints for plinking, don't bother taking them to any matches with your Savage or any other gun. They will let you down, just when you least expect it. You'll hear a report slightly out of normal, and there will be that hole, 2" low!! Glad you are happy with your rifle. Eagleye.

My BTVS absolutly loves the Lapua Super Club ammo. I'm getting 1" at 50 & 75 quite easily but at 100 it's a bit of an artilley shot (have to aim fairly high).

I'm very happy with the gun though. It shoots as well as my friends CZ452 but to be honest the Savage action does not feel as though it will last as long.

Thank you for your replies and comments.

Admittedly, it was dead calm when the 1" groups were shot at 100 meters. Never shot any .22 rifle this well before, so will do a MKIIF vs. CZ4542 Style shootout on next range trip. They will be shooting under identical conditions.

Should be a revealing test of accuracy, albeit with the same Winchester Dynapoint ammo but in my experience, they both shoot their best with this ammo (from my stash of various cheap bulk) anyway. FYI, I've never bought or used anything but bulk ammo.

I did have one failure to fire with Dynapoints yesterday.

Also agree that the Savage lacks the CZ's build quality, feel and finish but at 1/3 the price, I will accept that. There are little nits that need picking but will gladly overlook them all because of its amazing accuracy.

I just took mine to the range today for the first time. It is very accurate!

if you were simply looking for a walking gun,not bench rest multiple shooting-would you be just as well off as far as accuracy is concerned with the regular MK 2 vs the heavy barrel version?

My FV shoots very well also. I was using CCI Mini Mags, and it obviously loved them. My 10/22 looked like a shotgun in comparison. I was shooting at 50 yards, and the holes were printing within an inch, and I don't declare to be a sniper. The bullets were simply going where I pointed them.

For what it's worth, both guns hated the Federal 525 pack. My shooting neighbor at the range was using a 10/22 target, and it hated them as well.

IMO, the FV isn't all that much heavier than the regular F version. I looked at both before buying, and I was surprised just how light the "heavy" barrel was. Now I've never shot the regular version, and don't know how much accuracy is to be gained/lost by choosing one over the other, but I figure it couldn't hurt to have it, and I knew I was going to scope it anyway.

I have found the non-heavy barrels to be not as accurate as the heavy barrels.

With my MKII heavy, I can get under an inch at 75yrds with bulk ammo, under 2" at 100yrds.

With my buddys MKII normal barrel the groups open up, 3" at 75 and a pattern at 100 (over 7")

IMHO for the extra 1.5lbs MKII Heavy is the way to go. If you want it lighter to carry around get the plastic version....

Cheers!

the reason I asked was I was told the marlin 7000 heavy barrel was discontinued because the regular barreled 795 shot just as well, except for multiple firing that heated up the barrel

I have the Lakefield Mark II. I've found winchester dynapoints to be very accurate as well. But shooting 100 yards isn't usually that pretty around St. John's (Canada's windiest city).

weight saving with sporting barrel aren't that great when compared to possible miss while hunting.

mainly my .22 hunting is shooting the heads off grouse generally around 25 yards or less,so I've got to have pretty good accuracy -especially when there's no bench rest.

whats the weight difference between the regular barrel and the heavy barrel? [and why they have longer than 16''factory barrels on .22s ,I don't know]I'm tempted to cut it to 18''[the minimun for non factory]to save some weight with a heavy barrel

When was the last time you heated a bolt action .22RF barrel hot enough that you could say that there'd be an appreciable difference in accuracy between a sporter weight vs heavy weight barrel? I'm guessing not that often.

Remember, it's the quality INSIDE the barrel that counts, not the outside. The barrel will either be accurate or it won't, regardless of barrel contour.

My Savage BV shoots acceptably well at 25 & 50 yds. but falls to pieces at 100 yds. I'm not even close to the reported claims being made here. +4" groups are the norm, even shooting Lapua Standard Club. I've fired a wide range of ammo through mine and the best so far has been Federal 710, Federal 712, and the fore mentioned Lapua Standard Club.

I wanted one for the longest time. I was put off by reports that these guns feed like #### if the mag isn't in exactly the right spot. That was confirmed in my head when I fired a 93F in 22wmr. How well do your guns feed?
