Mag primers

Yes, large rifle magnum primers in 300 win mag. Also have used standard large rifle primers. Both will work. The magnum primers may be superior where loads are large and or conditions of extreme cold. Out of a abundance of caution, if you switch primers from standard to magnum, you should reduce the load and work up to a new max.

I did my original load development on my 300 win mag using Federal 215 magnum rifle primers. I've also used the exact same load using CCI and Winchester large rifle primers. There was absolutely ZERO difference in performance or impact points. I even fired a string of 6 using 3 different primers. No effect.

Denny, these questions always come up, no matter how many times we answer them the way you did.

Denny, I do recall asking you the same question not all that long ago, this is the third time I've seen you answer it since! Do you have the answer programed in speed dial or what? You sir have the patience of a sniper when it comes to us "less experienced" reloaders! On behalf of all of us I would like to say thank-you!

3rd ?? That's it ??? :D

I haven't actually been in here that much over the past few weeks. I'm getting things organized for my (final) move to Edmonton. We bought the biggest house we've ever had. 1722 sq ft not including the basement. The most beautiful thing about this place is about 25 percent of the basement isn't finished. I've got about 25 ft by 8 to 10 feet to work with and it's ALL going to be reloading and gun room !!!! I can't wait. Anyway, if I seem a little scarce of the next few weeks, you guys know why.

I refer you to my VERY experienced and learned colleague, H4831 - Bruce for all your reloading information needs :D I've learned more real world things from Bruce's posts than any 5 reloading manuals. By the way Bruce...I still remember that picture of you on the quad, on the ham radio, in the mountains on one of your hunting trips....and yes....I'm jealous and want to go hunting with you :D

As far as primers go, I'll never say there is absolutely no difference. I will however say with absolute certainty that I've done the experiments, and whatever the differences are, I don't notice them in my ammo. I've shot in +30 c and in -30 c. If I was out on a $5000.00 fly in caribou hunt and I could only take one gun, you're damned right I'm going to have Federal 215 magnum rifle primers.....every case and bullet will be weighed.....every charge will be weighed twice......every finished round will be weighed and inspected with a magnifying glass. I would have no expectations of a change in performance....but I'd do it anyway just because you don't get a "do over" on trips like that. It would be for my peace of mind and really, nothing more.

For general plinking, I load with my powder throw and use whatever primers. For a load development or a match, primers are not high on my list of things to worry about.
