Tapco or Magpul Stock?

Hey Guys,

Just curious... as I see at lot of AR-15 builds with these.

Any advantages to upgrading to the Magpul CTR?

I know the Tapco sits loosely but it doesn't seem to effect the accuracy when I am shooting. Is the Magpul tighter, lighter, etc?

If it fits better (better action) and is lighter is what I was curious about.
I have not had a chance to see or use one yet and was hoping to get feedback from those that have.

I have a CTR. Even without the friction fit, its a rock solid fit, it does move back and forth a bit if you try to move it. With the friction lock? its rock solid side-to-side, up & down, back and forth.

It FEELS like a solid stock.

The Magpul is simply a better stock. Also take a look at the LMT SOPMOD and Vltor stocks. They're a little more costly, but you are getting top drawer quality.

Whatever.
Price does not automatically mean better quality.
Just like every sport, there are the guys that have to spend top dollar all the time thinking they are getting the best. And there are companies that are willing to charge top dollar to get that business.

Chinese plastic is Chinese plastic after all.

The CTR's claimed advantage is the lock it has that prevents it from moving.
I am not sure how much other peoples stocks move? I never had an issue with sloppy , loose movement with a 4/6 position stock. Even with the few I have purchased from E-Bay.

Tapco stock is fine.

I have the Magpul MOE. The thing is rock solid on the tube just like the CTR. The MOE and CTR look pretty much the same and the MOE is much cheaper.

The MOE line by Magpul is a very cost-effective way to get a more ergonomic rifle. The pistol grips fit the hand very nicely (Same size as a MIAD with the medium grip insert, flat front insert).

The MOE stock is a less expensive version of the CTR, sans the friction lock. The stocks are very tight on their respective tubes, and are quite strong (Try to clear a weapon by hitting the toe of the stock on the ground with your Tapco crap).

Comparing Magpul with Tapco is retarded. Magpul makes a better product and is actually fielded overseas. I've never seen a Tapco stock on a rifle overseas but I've seen plenty of magpul stuff.

Tapco is what it is, a cheap alternative. I wouldn't use one but to each his own.

I have to agree. The minor movement felt in a factory six position is annoying at best. Unless you're building a precision rifle I don't see how the minor movement experienced is of any significance; especially at the ranges most AR's are being shot at or built for. I run Vltor EMOD stocks on my AR's for several reasons.(none of which involves removing/reducing the felt movement.) The increased area for a better cheek weld(its almost like ### for your face) and the ability to store batteries. The integrated rubber butt pad is nice, although slip ons are available for the standard 6pos. Selecting a stock is no different than any other accessory. Determining the intended role/purpose of the rifle should narrow down the appropriate choices. Running a Magpul PRS stock on an 10.5/11.5" AR with a red dot is probably not the best choice. Other factors to consider include sling attachment options and weight. Some stocks add a fair amount of weight which can help balance the rifle. Some stocks have limited sling points which may or may not be of concern.

Define your role then decide on gear that helps achieve it.

Excellent advice TDC. My AR is not going to be used as a precision Rig, it will be used for Target practice and a general fun-factor.

It may make sense for me to go with the Tapco for now and just deal with a little movement.

For more precision, sounds like the Vltor EMOD or the PRS is a sweet setup if/when I decide to build a precision Rifle.

Honestly, if you're going to run Tapco and seeing how plastic is plastic. You can get airsoft copies of all the popular stocks for cheap. Just so you know. As for your intended purpose. All shooting activities are "target practice". If you intend to sit at the bench and shoot groups with accuracy in mind. You've got the wrong rig. Precision AR's are far from cheap and a standard carbine although accurate, is no precision system.

Are the Magpul CTR and MOE plastic as well?

Good points BUT would you recommend a Tapco over a CTR?? That is the real question. I have had them all. I've got some CTRs right now, had some Vltors, LMTs etc etc etc.

I'll be the first to say that I don't give a s**t about a little wiggle and don't choose to own a CTR because of it's friction lock. I buy for quality alone.

I agree the check weld is nice on the wider stocks but the Vltor's kinda suck if you've ever snagged/ripped out facial hair due to their modular interlocking battery tube design. I still love them but I like the LMT better simply due to the smooth top. Now that the new LMTs have the sling point they are one of my favs.

I agree with a lot of what was said except this:

plastic is plastic.

Plastics/polymers vary as widely in their mechanical properties as steel and aluminum do.

same airsoft factories.

Honestly sometimes this s**t about "CHINESE PLASTIC ARRRGH!!!" drives me friggin insane. If you hate plastic so much just go back to shooting your garand.

Gregb, what's the price you're getting for the tapco? Because unless it's like $20 I don't see why you wouldn't just get a MOE.
