Coyotes.

grandpa wants me to shoot coyotes at his place. it'll be in a hazelnut orchard, and therefore pretty close range, maybe 100 - 150 yards on the outside. would a Ruger 10/22 be adequate, obviously with proper shot placement?

i would use my 7mm, but for there area he's in, that would be way way too loud. the echoes are retarded. the neighbour uses a shotgun on starlings, and it was stupidly loud, even 5 acres away, in the trees. also, i don't own a .17HMR or .22-250, the ideal 'yote guns. and i can't afford to go buy one. :(

I have had bad luck with 22LR and Coyotes (in AB at least). I had two coyotes run off after I head shot them. One I head shot twice at 15m which I am certain died but I couldn't find it (I searched for about 2 hrs in a heavily grassed grove). Coyotes are tough little critters and are able to survive some nasty shots. My buddy just sent me a pic of a 3 legged coyote he recently shot - it must have chewed off it's leg to escape a trap though he claims a farmer in his area shot it in the leg with a .243. It looked pretty darn healthy before he gave it the final lead treatment. I would say give it a go with a 22LR and some stingers (I used a HV HP) but keep it close (< 50m). Don't bother shooting them at 100m - it likely won't kill them animal immediately and if it runs off it may have a slow lingering death, it would also be harder to hit it again with a follow up shot.
 
The only way I would shoot a coyote with a .22 was if it was within 25 yards and even then I would be looking for a better option. Shotgun with target loads maybe?

At those distances it wouldn't be adequate if you want a humane kill. Being concerned about noise is commendable but would you rather the neighbours hear the sound of a shot or have a wounded coyote running around the neighbourhood?
 
I head shot a coyote with a .270 last year (200 yrd shot) and it was still alive and had to be shot again. I was surprised as it was missing a significant amount of the middle of its head.

I would say a .22 would be too light past 75 yrds for an effective kill.
 
you can get an NEF 22-250 or 223 for cheap and it will do the job for you better then your 22lr. I hate coyotes, but with a 22LR you have good chance to just make them bleed, if any animal activist ear that you don't kill them. they will start to scream again.
 
I would borrow a .223 or .243. a .22LR just doesn't have alot of energy. If you must , a Velocitor CCI would be my choice of ammo, and at close range, which is very unlikely for a yote.
 
I would not recomend shooting a coyote with a 22lr at any range. Sure its been done with sucess but im sure many more have run away to suffer a slow death. Coyotes are a tuff animal and anything but a perfect shot will not drop them with 22lr. If it were me I would look for somthing bigger.
 
Since coyotes are apparently so hard to kill, use your 7mm, it's not like you'll be firing shot after shot & your neighrbour has already set a noise standard with an occasional shotgun blast.
 
I'm another one who thinks that the .22 LR is too light for coyotes. Sure, it's capable of killing a coyote, but in my opinion going with something with a bit more zip is more humane.
 
thanks for the info folks. i'll give it some more thought. what i might do is bring the 7mm along for backup. i do want to be sure of a humane kill, so if i do use the .22, the shots will be less than 100m. i figure there's a decent chance of this, since i'll be able to set up in a tree, above the normal level of sight for a coyote. hopefully this will allow me to bring them in closer.

I largely agree.
 
just use the 7mm and injoy the practice. The 22 is very short range like 25 yd & only with a well placed shot. Coyotes don't always give a nice standing target so why take the chance. Use enough to kill it every time.
 
just use ur 7mm. one loud shot will not shatter ur neighbors universe. more gun is better than not enough witch is pretty much just the .22lr. Coyotes are a tuff animal and you run a much higher chance of just injuring it rather than killing it.

You could even use a bow if u can get ur hands on one.

If you use a shotgun use a BB load at least.

I hunt allot of coyote my self and respect them. They are a great predator. Personally if I found out u shot one with a .22lr ide be pretty pissed off.
