Frustrated with Gun Club Experience

The Red Deer Fish & Game Club just instituted a $10 guest fee for the outdoor range, which sounds sucky if you're just introducing someone to the "sport", however it was in response to people bringing guests who were apparently jacking around and didn't know the meaning of cease fire and not touching guns while others were downrange.

Funnily enough, the letter that just went around said it would apply to "wives and guests under 18" - I guess we're still property of our husbands and have to get their permission to go to the range... accompanied!

Anyhoo, the Blindman Valley Rod & Gun Club is pretty good (Bentley).

Unfortunately, there's nowhere you can go (correct me if I'm wrong) to shoot clays short of Emil of Many Guns private backyard range north of Red Deer. But you can no longer shoot jacketed/milsurp there because some jacka$$ shot an something big at the 25 and let 'er rip and there were riccochets (we once saw a rig cowboy shoot an SKS at the 25 like there were not enough 7.62s to make it until tomorrow - we had to tell him to slow it down and aim).

Man, oh, man......I guess some of you must be too young to remember what it was like at Barnet Rifle Range. One round rule in rifle, 5 rounds in pistol, stink eye and public shaming via the PA system by Marcy (RO) were the order of the day! It never stopped me from going and some days I even got her to crack a smile. FWIW, there are a lot of a$$holes and ignorant putzes out there and they don't all necessarily hang out at gun ranges. I view them 'fixtures' like a desk, plant or whatnot. There exist at work, the range and are everywhere. I classify these knobs as 'objects' and an inconvenience. Not worth getting your blood pressure up over a desk, plant, streetlamp or whatnot. Life's too short..........................

Anyone go to LRGC to shoot trap or skeet and bring a trap gun not a defender?

How was your experience?

I was a member at Lrgc... Got my ltatt and never renewed. But I was warned going in so I shoveled the miserable a**hole attitude back at him and he got a bit nicer... Not that I cared. I'm 30 and knew the rules and bad hours going in, I met some nice people and was warned about when the old boys showed up too shoot, so I could avoid them ( they won't let you shoot while they eat lunches made by their wife's in the room next door).

And before any of you bitter old pricks try and give me some smart ass wisdom about the great big world, save your self the trouble. you aren't my father and if you were I would have aborted my OWN birth than be even remotely related to any of you. I pay my own way and have since I was a teen no freebie's here so get off your soapbox cause your not good at it!!! (insert stinkeye here!)

The world YOU made is ####. Judging by some attitudes on here I now fully understand why...

Yes, these are the same old scroat bags who basically gave your firearm rights to the liberals while they practiced the "stinkeye" in there ranges they inhabit like trolls...IMHO

I'm in Langley also and will be shopping for a range with my friend who feels the same way... I don't give a crap if you don't like me you mean old bastards... Cause I'll be here to fix the damage you've done to our pastime long after your worm food, ha ha ha

Anybody that's not a master of the new guy stinkeye, If your in Langley and want to grab a coffee pm me and we'll have a Langley shooters night. I'm normally quite mellow and polite!

That was my first rant... Kinda fun ;)

I had a good laugh!

We need a good range in langley, a rifle range would be great.

I would love a good handgun/rifle range...200meters would be great...

I think, if I remember right the centerfire cutoff is around 270th st or something, so... have to get a nice place out there and rent an excavator for a while. I wish I could build one here, but probably couldn't get away with it.

Is that (was?) the one below SFU in Port Moody? You could hear shots from there on a clear day... ah...

Yes, that was it! (Thanks to Mayor Corrigan) Just below SFU (along with Coast Marksman) on Barnett Hwy on the north side of Burnaby Mountain.

*sigh*...I miss that place. Gone were the days when it only took 15 mins to get to the range....City officials tried so long to shut that place down and eventually got their way. Hopefully PoCo doesn't end up like those ranges. I'll then miss the days when it took me only 45 mins to get to the range:(

and of course, there was good old Marcy:) She was actually a very nice lady once you got to know her but she sure scared the sh*t & straightened up newbies pretty fast... but she was just doing her job....she even eased up on the 5 round rule once she knew you

There are at least two sides to every story.

Perhaps the people at these clubs are tired of the punk who struts in with his pistol grip defender and becomes angry when told he can't shoot clays if his gun doesn't have a full stock.

Or the ass clown who gets snotty when asked to sign a couple of non-member waivers, when told he must wear eye and ear protection, can only load two rounds, must have his gun open and empty when not shooting and can't shoot 3" magnum shells.

When you remind him politely after repeated infractions he gives you the hard man stare like he's the baddest thing on two feet.

They get told to leave and not come back. The reason why is because the members are there to shoot not baby sit some snot nosed loser with an attitude and a shotgun.

After they are sent packing some of them come on the Internet and whine like pissy pant little school girls about fudds and how unfair life is.

Boo hoo.

Guys, why can't you play nice? There is a club/range out there to suit your needs. Personally, I don't give a damn what a guy or gal shoots, how many rounds/shells in the tube/mag/clip:p, pistol grip, wood, plastic, barrel length or whatever makes you happy. AS LONG AS YOU SHOOT SAFELY. Have fun.

How does that saying go about putting a foot into ones mouth?

You were not there, you obviously cannot be aware of the way the events exactly occured. In my case I was respectful and polite to him. I had to plead with him, even after bringing out my shotgun with a trigger lock and a cable lock to let me shoot it. I didn't even want to shoot trap initially.

I bought the "defender" to take with me out in the bush while operating truck. It took almost 30 minutes of me talking with him and trying to understand what is so evil about my shotgun. If anything I was completely on the passive side.

After explaining to the old timer, 2 or 3 times that it was a brand new firearm I hadn't even shot yet. Finally something clicked in his head and it finally made sense that someone might like to know how their firearm feels before taking it out into the bush, even if it was just with target load. I also had the correct ammunition with me to and gave him my shell casings because mine were the reloadable kind or whatever.

The point I'm trying to make here, is that I have had customer service training and experience, I know how to handle people in a polite way. So when you have that experience and go somewhere and feel uncomfortable and looked down on the entire time, for no good reason other than a stereo type... well that person can kindly go f$@% themselves.

I find there are three club 'types' in Canada.

1. The middle ground type, that rules you to death,
(by thier own 'extra-plus' rules, not province/feds) But this is all above board, so we all know what one's getting into beforehand, so it's okay.

2. The worst type, that appears to be transparent & above the board, but the 'old guard' have thier own circle of accepted members, and one always feels like the FNG/mushroom/stranger. (kept in the dark forever)
Lack of two-way communcations, is prevalent.

3. The best type, while complying with all provincal/federal laws, provides excellent recreational activity.
They truly welcome new members to the sport, while equally sharing the burden of range duties.
As well, providing timely/patient advice to neophytes at the correct moments.
Great communications on all levels, usually is a very good sign.

Yeah, that sounds like a real polite approach. If your precious self feels "uncomfortable" people can "kindly go f**k themselves."

What people forget is that you aren't a "customer" at most ranges. You are either a member with certain responsibilities or a guest who is there at the forbearance of the club.

If you like a club and can live within the rules then enjoy yourself. If not go somewhere else.

I love how people make assumptions. I can assure you that during my visit I was completely polite. The things I muttered under my breath as I drove out the drive way were not as friendly.

Considering at the time I was a member in good standing at the club, I felt that I was at least owed a respectful attitude from the RO. I did not feel that I received that. Others here who have experienced what I am talking about agree.

I happen to notice that you're located in Ontario. So I would like to ask, have you ever been to Langley Rod and Gun Club, in Langley British Columbia, located directly beside Brookswood Secondary School(which I also attended).
