The mythical .270...

It kills like most of all the other popular calibers. Ever meet a popular rifle caliber that that didn't? They're all pretty similar when you think about it (6.5x55, .260 Rem, .25-06, 7X57, .280, .308, .30-06, 7MM Rem mag, 8x57, etc.) Which one of these won't shoot to 400 yards and more?

It's fun to imagine any practical differences though. Even if it means "dic" which one you choose on a hunt for deer, moose, elk, or bear.:p;)

270 Win

The 270 win. with any tough bullet in 130-150 is good choice for game up to and including moose, most people can shoot them well due to the low recoil. I love the 270 in a light mountain rifle set up, hard to beat.

I plan on picking up a 270wsm as a dedicated, do-all rifle. My Savage 10FLCP-K is just too heavy as a bush gun, and my M14 is no better. Also keep in mind, most sellers seem to have the .270 win and .270 WSM always on hand, typically older stock, for whatever reason. My .270WSM is currently listed at the older stock price of $575. A new .308, as I originally intended, is $709. That's a hefty price-hike, if you ask me.

Keeping in mind, I don't intend on shots over a hundred yards...

Troutseeker, relax! I happen to know a couple of young lads that each got 270s for graduation presents. In the first 'leener&meaner' 10 years or so they shot and got more moose than some of us will see in a lifetime. A few deer wandered by during those days, and it worked well on them too.:)

You got that right!
Once, while going on a tough back packing trip in the mountains I had three equally accurate, scope sighted rifles to choose from. A 243, a 270 and a 30-06. I based my descision on weight, only. Carfully weighed each one and the 30-06 was lightest, so I took it.
I guess that about sums up my views on calibres!

The cartridge does not get me too excited, however not a bad one to have kicking around its like a 30-06 type cartridge you just can not say too much about it, it works. For some reason call me crazy but I think of a .277 bullet as a 25cal,,stuck between 2 really good bullets, the 6.5mm and 7mm bullet and the 25 stuck between the 243 and 264m oh well thats my thinking...
I used a 700 BDL SS for years for deer, still have it, will always keep it, great shooting low recoil and easy to load for..

Usually the guys who put down the 270 either have necer used one or are infatuated with all the magnums!! In my 45 yrs. of hunting, I have shot Elk, many moose, deer, goats and sheep all with 270! One should read O'Connor's book and digest it! Also Jack didn't have the luxury the of the greatly improved bullets now! The only downside, it is a little much for deer perhaps (meat loss) but their dead. Also a little light for grizzly's cause you can't get real heavy bullet to smash up bones!

Didn't do much for me that's why I sold it to Brambles:D:D

I had two 270's at the time a standard and a whizzum.....I sold the standard and kept the 270 Whizzum. Nothing shot with the Whizzum yet but I have shot elk, mulies, bears and whitetails with the 270 Winchester and its worked real well...

The only way a .270 is too light for moose or elk is if you insist on shooting them in the arse.
By the way Troutseeker I recall reading in one of Jack O'connor's books that for some reason he absolutely hated for anyone to call a mule deer a mulie.
So if you're invoking the great Jack's name please refrain from the mulie thing.

So that's where it initially came from! :)Feel free to PM me your favorite loads for that particular rifle;). Brambles did a great job on that stock, I can't wait to put some rounds thru it and see how it shoots.

I will probably use it this season for a high country mule deer hunt. And next year paln on taking it out to look for sheep.

By the way, this rifle is 5.5 pounds... Gonna have Talley's and a Leupold vxII lightweight with long range reticle on it.

I don't own a .270 now, and probably won't own another, but when I did, I noticed that it did just about everything a 7RM or 30-06 did, with regards to killing beasts.

If I was to get another .270, it would be a 280. But it would kill the same, anyway...:)
