Mossberg 30-06 broke after 41 rounds

Hmm... better be giving my 12 gauge Maverick (mossberg) defender a good going over before I'm up to my elbows in an Elk with a Griz deciding I have his dinner! Maybe for this use economical wasn't want I wanted

I never had a problem with my Maverick 88 shotgun, it worked flawlessly.

I tried neck-sizing for my mossy at first.
BIG MISTAKE!!
My rifle didn't quite chamber that round, and when I tried to extract the round when the bolt didn't close, I sheared off the extractor. I had a stuck LIVE shell in the chamber, and I couldn't fire it, or get it out. I had to pay $75 for my gunsmith to spin the barrel off of the action to remove the shell (plus $15 for a new extractor).

Not only that, but the rifle wouldn't fire every round in a box of ammunition (reloaded or factory). I checked the headspace, and it was fine. it turned out that the firing pin wasn't properly finished when it left the factory, so I had to touch it up with crocus cloth. after that, it hasn't misfired, but it's definitely not a rifle I would trust in the field.

People who won't buy a gun because one of their models sucks aren't thinking very intelligent. All of the major brands (Remington, Winchester, Savage, etc.) have made horrible guns. Just because Remington makes the 597(mine works good mind you) and the 710 doesn't mean that I wouldn't buy a 700.

Great point. Best thing to do is just do your research beforehand.

The 710/770 vs 700 comparison is a great one.

i was really thinking of buying a 4x4 in 30-06 to do my hunting
this thread is making me think twice. now, i;m not even sure if i want it anymore

I think the Stevens 200 is a much better econo rifle.

NAA.

I\ve owned 2 Mossberg 500's that preformed flawlessly through 100's of rounds each.

odd that I keep getting reports that their rifles are pure s**t....

I have 2 500's and a 100 ATR that function exactly as they should with zero quality issues. A failure after only 41 rounds has got to be very disappointing regardless of who manufactured the firearm.

I have an 18" maverick which is coming with me next week as a bear gun, I had a 500 as a duck gun and the .410 version which was the best .410 I've had.
All are good shotguns, but the rifles are hurting mossberg IMO.

i've never liked the look or feel of the Mossberg rifles. i have a Maverick that probably has 3000 rounds through it now. i only clean it maybe every 1000 rounds. it functions perfectly. and the fit and feel is better than an 870.

well I gave cabela's a call, and they were very helpful. I sent my gun back to them, and after inspecting it, called back to say they are sending me a replacement rifle...it would have been nice to just get something else entirely, but I don't have time, as a moose hunt is coming up in a few weeks. hopefully this ####pile works better

Buying a rifle from Mossberg, is like ordering a hamburger in a fine cuisine french restaurant. They are best at and known for their inexpensive plain jane shotguns. Period.

Isn't buying a Mossberg rifle more like buying a burger from McDonald's? You kind of know that you shouldn't but you do it because it is convenient and cheap.

Way cheaper in price then the 870 as well.

I liked the open shell lifter design on the maverick, and the fact that the extractor was replaceable with a turn of a screw if need be unlike the remmy rivet.

They are also pretty light.
